San Martin Square has undergone several transformations over the past four centuries, possibly more than any other area in the city. Until the late 17th century, it was known as “El Retiro [The Retreat]” after a monk’s hermitage that stood on the site. In the early 18th century, it served as a slave market and warehouse; in 1800, the second and last Bullring of Buenos Aires was built on the square, where it operated until bullfighting was banned in 1819. The General San Martin Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers would later be established here, until the definitive landscape of the square and its surroundings began to emerge towards the late 19th century.

In 1936, the Argentine Government acquired the Anchorena Palace to serve as the seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and renamed it San Martin Palace. It is now the seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship for protocol purposes only; the offices of the Ministry are now in the new building located at Arenales and Esmeralda, its architecture in dialogue with Christophersen’s monumental work.

The Ortiz Basualdo Palace was the Beaux-Arts residence of the marriage composed by Daniel Ortiz Basualdo and Mercedes Zapiola. It was designed in 1912 by French architect Paul Pater. It currently houses the French embassy, doing so since 1939.

Avenida Alvear is an upscale thoroughfare in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Located in the neighbourhood of Recoleta, it extends for seven blocks, from the Plazoleta Carlos Pellegrini to Alvear Plaza.

The Pereda Palace is an old manor located in front of the Plazoleta Carlos Pellegrini, at the beginning of Avenida Alvear. It was built by the doctor and large farmer Celedonio Tomás Pereda (1860–1941) and his wife María Justina Girado (1865–1942), member of a family of landowners as she was the granddaughter of Juan Elías Girado (1794–1858), owner of the ″Estancia San Juan″. The building is currently the residence of the Ambassador of Brazil in Buenos Aires and headquarters of the Cultural Space of the Embassy.

The magnificent Kavanagh Building was the tallest building in Latin America when it was completed in 1936 and the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world. It was also one of the first buildings in the city to boast several modern luxuries for the time.
The 120m building, located overlooking one of the city’s most elegant squares, is an architectural symbol of Buenos Aires and a striking example of the rationalist and art deco styles that were trends at the time of its construction.

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Recoleta, Buenos Aires was built as part of the Franciscan monastery, completed in 1732 and dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar. It is the second-oldest church in Buenos Aires, and has served as a parish church following the expulsion of the Franciscans in 1821.
