El Calafate Trip Overview

Early in the morning search for the hotels in Calafate and then head towards the mythical Route 40. This route borders the Argentino Lake, crosses the Santa Cruz River and La Leona River, after 1.15 hours you arrive at the Hotel de Campo La Leona, almost a museum on Route 40, where you can have a coffee with homemade cakes.
The journey continues bordering Lake Viedma with the Andes Mountains in the background. Before arriving at El Chaltén, you will stop at the Viedma Glacier Viewpoint from where you can see a beautiful panoramic view of the homonymous Lake and Glacier and the emblematic Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre hills.
After 3 hours of driving, you will arrive at the Villa de Montaña El Chaltén.
Once in town, we will have lunch and later we will indicate the start of the self-guided trails that start in El Chaltén and lead to the main viewpoints: Laguna Capri, Mirador del Fitz Roy, Mirador del Cerro Torre, Mirador de los Cóndores, Salto of Chorrillo

What to Expect When Visiting El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina

Stop At: Road to El Chalten, El Chalten Argentina

El Chaltén is a municipality located in the Los Glaciares National Park, in the Argentine province of Santa Cruz. From here it is possible to access the trails that surround the peaks of Cerro Torre and Mount Fitz Roy, to the northwest. Near Fitz Roy, a path leads to the viewpoint of the Los Tres Lagoon. Just northwest of the town, the shore of the Capri lagoon offers views of the mountains.
We will arrive in our vehicles to the mountain village of El Chaltén after 3 hours of travel, having traveled 220 kms.

Stop At: Lago Argentino, El Calafate Argentina

We will take the mythical Route 40 along the Argentino Lake, we will cross the Santa Cruz River (Here we will tell Darwin’s experiences with Fitz Roy going up this river until very close there), then we will continue to the La Leona River, where we will travel through its canyon to arrive after 1 hour 15 minutes, to the old hotel of route La Leona (almost a museum of Route 40), where you can have coffee with homemade cakes

Then continue vehicle through the valley of the Rio de las Vueltas to the White River, where we find the Hosteria El Pilar, there we will start a walk with AAGM mountain guide, passing through the Piedras Blancas Glacier, Camp. Poincenot, Mount Fitz Roy, to the Capri Lagoon, where we will find our Base Camp

Pass By: Mirador Lago Viedma, Estancia la Silesia Argentina

We will continue along Lake Viedma – having the Andes Mountains in the background (Including Fitz Roy and the Tower). Before reaching the town we will stop at the Viedma Glacier viewpoint from where you can see a beautiful panoramic view of the Glacier, the Cordillera and the emblematic Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.

Pass By: Glaciar Piedras Blancas, El Chalten Argentina

It will allow you to appreciate in all its splendor the beautiful Piedras Blancas glacier, about 2000 m away, with its characteristic cascades of seracs that descend through the glacier circus of the north Fitz Roy massif, flanked by the Madsen and Electric hills. With luck, it is possible to witness some of the small landslides that happen during the summer.
there we will start a walk with AAGM mountain guide, passing through the Piedras Blancas Glacier, Camp. Poincenot, Mount Fitz Roy, to the Capri Lagoon, where we will find our Base Camp.
