Geyser del Tatio

Atacama Trip Overview

Geysers are formations that usually exist in volcanic regions. They are like small volcanoes that erupt with water, expelled through a crevice. The water that comes out of the geysers is very hot and, when in contact with the air, it generates steam, which is even more evident when the air is cold.

Tatio geysers are considered the third largest geyser field in the world and are rare formations. They erupt from time to time and can suddenly stop erupting, just as a new geyser can form at any time. There are all kinds of geysers in this field, some quite large and impressive, others smaller and less expressive. As they can be dangerous, avoid walking on top of crevices and respect the limit of stones that exist around the geysers.

Itinerary

We’ll leave San Pedro do Atacama at dawn for the Altiplano, climbing the hills and mountains of the Andes. After a 1-hour journey, we will arrive at the Tatio Geysers, a unique natural spectacle in the world, with 80 smoking geysers at a height of 4200 meters. In this natural setting, we’ll enjoy breakfast and then go through the geothermal field, surrounded by many columns of smoke. Then we will visit the rustic pozón, inside the geothermal field, even if you are not qualified to take a bath.
Back to San Pedro do Atacama, we will stop on the Putana River, where we will observe the native flora and fauna of the place, and then make another stop at the village of Machuca, where it is possible to buy llama meat on the sword, empanadas and other foods typical of the area.
