What to Expect When Visiting Lhasa, Tibet, China

Itinerary

Day 1: Lhasa

Pass By: Lhasa, Lhasa, Tibet
After arriving in Lhasa, local tour guide will welcome you at the airport/train station, then transfer to the hotel. Acclimatize the high altitude in the hotel.

Day 2: Lhasa

Stop At: Potala Palace, No.35 Gongqian Alley, Beijing Middle Road Cheng Guan District, Lhasa 850000 China
The tour begins from UNESCO World Heritage site – Potala Palace, which is also the winter palace of Dalai Lama. Situated at 12,139 feet above sea level, it is a 13-story high building that contains over 1,000 rooms, various statues, stupas, murals and artifacts.

Stop At: Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Chengguan District, Lhasa 850000 China
Then continue to Jokhang Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a spiritual center for Buddhists in Tibet.

Stop At: Barkhor Street, Chengguan District, Lhasa 851500 China
Next to Jokhang Temple there is Barkhor Street, filled with pilgrims and street vendors, selling traditional Tibetan items such as prayer wheels and jewelry.

Day 3: Lhasa

Stop At: Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si), Southern Slope of Genpeiwuzi Mountain, Chengguan District, Lhasa 850000 China
In the morning you will go to visit Drepung Monastery. Founded in 1416, it is one of the six great Gelug monasteries. Drepung Monastery is the largest monastery of Tibetan Buddhism and the highest-ranking one of the Gelug Sect.

Stop At: Sera Monastery, Wuze Hill , Sera Chengguan District, Lhasa 850000 China
Continue the tour to visit Sera Monastery, which is one of the six main monasteries of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, and was founded in 1419. The highlight is the Monks debate at around 15:00-17:00 in the afternoon.

Day 4: Lhasa – Shigatse

Stop At: Yamdrok Yumtso Lake, Langkazi Country, Nagarze County 851100 China
In the morning, drive from Lhasa to Shigatse. On the way, drive over the Gampala pass (4790 meters high), and you will have a glimpse of Yamdrok Yumtso Lake (at an altitude of 4400 meters). The Lake is surrounded by many snow-capped mountains and in the distance you can have spectacular views of Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar(7191 meters high), the highest mountain near Lhasa.

Stop At: Palkhor Monastery and Kumbum Stupa, Northwest of the County, Gyangze County 857400 China
Gyantse was historically Tibet’s third largest city (after Lhasa and Shigatse). In Gyantse, you will visit the famous Palkhor Monastery and Kumbum Stupa.

Day 5: Shigatse to Everest via Tingri

Stop At: Tashilunpo Monastery, Jijilangka Road, Shigatse 857001 China
In the morning, you will visit Tashilunpo Monastery, the seat of Tibet’s second highest incarnation, the Panchen Lama. Then, you will leave Shigatse after getting your Alien’s travel permit, and then drive to Lhatse, it is a small town where you can have lunch. Then, head to Shegar and if the weather is clear enough on the way down to Shegar, you can view the Mt. Everest in the distance. After 4 to 6 hours’ drive, you will arrive at Rongbuk Monastery but on the way, you will pass one of the highest passes in Tibet (Pang la Pass at height of 5050m), from that pass you will view the whole five highest peaks in the world.

Day 6: Everest – Kyilong Town

Stop At: Rongbuk Monastery, near North Everest Base Camp, Tingri County China
In the morning, you can appreciate the sunrise of Everest Peak if weather permits at the lodging area and then visit the Rongbuk Monstery – the unique highest monastery with nuns and monks living together. Later, you can visit the Everest Base Camp and take pictures of Mt. Everest at the closest distance in EBC.

After that, you will be driven from EBC to Kyirong border. On the way, you can enjoy breathtaking vista of Mt. Shishapangma and the Pekutso Lake. After passing the Ghungtang Lhamo(5236 meters high), you will arrive in Kyirong in late afternoon.

Day 7: Kyilong Town – Kathmandu

Pass By: Kathmandu, Kathmandu, Kathmandu Valley, Bagmati Zone, Central Region
In the morning, you will be driven to the new tourist border –Kyilong, tour guide will assist you to check out of the border. Then Nepalese driver will pick you up at the border and drive to Kathmandu city, end the services in Kathmandu city (NO Patan or Bhakatupur).
