The exploration of this captivating city starts with Revelin Fortress. You’ll discover Dubrovnik along with your personal guide on a walking tour through the huge fort and walk right on the ancient stone drawbridge – the epicenter of all the action during the war. Then, you’ll take a look at the Ploce Gate – one of the main entrances to the city.

The initial fort was built in 1463, in the period of unmistakable Ottoman empire threat, who have conquered Constantinople in 1453. Revelin was built as a detached fortress providing additional protection to the eastern City Gate.

The Dubrovnik Defenders Memorial is to be found on the ground floor of the Sponza Palace in Dubrovnik. It is a massive room with walls depicting monochrome pictures of Dubrovnik during the 1991 Homeland War, also known as the Croatian War of Independence. You’ll be surprised by how emotional you feel visiting this small exhibition of photos of the young people who died as a result of the conflict, larger ones of the bombardment and damage caused, and a film on a small screen.

Your guide will describe the everyday life during the war while you’re learning about this majestic palace.

Originally it was a site of a defense building in the early Middle Ages. It was destroyed by a fire in 1435 and the town decided to build a new palace. Then, gunpowder explosion badly damaged the building in 1463 and the building suffered damages from the earthquake of 1520 and again in 1667. Further reconstruction was in Baroque style.

The Church of the Holy Annunciation is a Serbian Orthodox church in Dubrovnik, south Croatia. It was built in 1877. The church sustained damage from bombing during the Siege of Dubrovnik.

Notice how disturbances provoked by the war are still evident in numerous areas in the Old Town.

Following an earthquake on 17 May 1520, which killed about 20 people and damaged many buildings in the city, the local Senate which governed the Dubrovnik Republic commissioned a new church as a sign of gratitude for sparing the city from even bigger destruction.

In 1667 Dubrovnik was hit again by a disastrous earthquake that killed some 5,000 citizens and destroyed much of the city. However, St. Saviour Church withstood the disaster so it can be seen today in its original form, as a fine example of the town’s Renaissance architecture.

During the republican era, the wooden drawbridge to the Pile Gate was hoisted each night with considerable pomp in a ceremony which delivered the city’s keys to the Ragusan rector.
