Start your day trip visiting the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, which was discovered accidentally in 1900 when a donkey disappeared through the ground, these catacombs make up the largest-known Roman burial site in Egypt.
The catacombs consist of three tiers of tombs and chambers cut into bedrock to a depth of 35m

Continue your tour heading to Pompey’s Pillar, a massive 30m column. It named by travelers who remembered the murder of the Roman general Pompey by Cleopatra’s brother, but an inscription on the base announces that it was erected in AD 291 to support a statue of the emperor Diocletian and you will be able to watch the ruins of the great temple of Serapis, the hybrid Greek and Egyptian god of Alexandria

Continue driving to visit the citadel (from outside) it continued to function as a military stronghold during the Mamluk, Ottoman and the following periods until 1882. It was heavily bombarded by the British, but later in the 20th century there were several attempts to restore the military citadel.
King Farouk I ordered the renovation of the citadel as a royal rest house in 1904. Since the revolution of 1952 it serves as an important touristic landmark in Alexandria.

Alexandria’s ancient library was one of the greatest of all classical institutions, and while replacing it might seem a Herculean task, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina manages this with aplomb. The complex has become one of Egypt’s major cultural venues and a stage for numerous international performers, and is home to a collection of brilliant museums.
