Wadi El-Hitan or Valley of the Whales is an uninhabited area and it is part of Wadi El-Rayan Reserve in Fayoum, about 40 km from Wadi El-Rayan.

In the Valley of the Whales, there are 10 complete structures of whales that lived in the region as well as more than 300 fossil whales dating back about 40 million years ago, and they were part of a large ocean that includes North Africa (Teth Sea) in addition to many marine fossils that you can see. In the reserve, there is an open museum.

At the same time, the Valley of Whales is a natural environment for endangered animals, such as the fennec fox and some migratory birds. In addition, the Valley of the Whales remains a very special place for astronomical monitoring, due to its distance from the pollution and noise of the city.
In the year 2005 AD, the Valley of the Whales (Wadi El Hitan) area was classified as a world heritage area and was chosen by UNESCO as the best world heritage areas for whale skeletons.
