Stop At: Champs-Elysees, Champs-Elysees, Paris, Ile-de-France

Explore occupied Paris (1940-1944) and discover one of the darkest periods in Paris history.

During the occupation, Parisians called avenue Foch avenue des Boches (Nickname given by the French to the Germans during the war)

This is where the Gestapo offices were located. Your tour guide will tell you about the arrest of great resistance fighters like Pierre Brossolette and their tragic endings.

You will see where Carl Heinrich von Stulpnagel, commander-in-chief of the occupation troops in France lived. You will find out what his involvement was in Operation Walkyria and its consequences.

You will go down the avenue des champs Elysées. The prestigious avenue was used for Reich propaganda purposes. We could find there: radio, cinema, offices of the Propagandastaffel.

Your guide will explain the function of the Grand Palace during the occupation. You will see which restaurants, cafes, cinemas which were frequented by the Germans (Fouquets, Maxims ….)

The tour will end at the Place de la Concorde where you will notice bullet holes dating from the liberation.

We will mention the spoliations of works of art by Goering in particular. They were stored at the Jeu de Paume Museum. The resistance action of Rose Vall-and inspired the film “Monuments men”.

A little further on at Le Meurice, the fate of Paris may have been played out when the governor Von Choltitz refused to destroy Paris and did not obey Hitler’s orders (Is paris burning?).

As you can see, this visit will be of particular interest to travelers interested in the Second World War.
