Stop At: Old Town (Altstadt) Tbilisi, Tbilisi Georgia

The view from the Metekhi Church (13th century) overlooks the old town of Tbilisi: the Narikala fortress, houses with wooden balconies, mosques, churches, bathing districts, the Peace Bridge and the Rike Park. These places are the calling cards of old Tbilisi. Here is the monument to King Wachtang I Gorgassali as an equestrian monument, which was erected for the founder of Tbilisi.

Stop At: Narikala Fortress, Tbilisi Georgia

Erected in the 4th century, the fortress has been expanded several times and forms one of the oldest monuments in the city. Inside the walls is the Church of St. Nicholas with beautiful frescoes. Narikala offers the visitor a special panorama of the old town that cannot be found anywhere else.

Stop At: Legvtakhevi Waterfall, MQHF+64M, Tbilisi, Georgia

The waterfall is located in the old town of Tbilisi, one of the ancient places Abanotubani (sulfur baths district). The waterfall is 22 meters high, and surrounded by cliffs, Leghvtakhevi waterfall is one of the coolest places in the city, loved by locals and travelers alike.

A dip in a sulfur bath is still a ritual in Tbilisi, a tribute to the pheasant who gave the city and its name the beginning (“Tbili” means “warm” in Georgian). The bathhouses have been here for more than a thousand years. The baths that have been preserved were mainly used in the 17th-18th centuries. Built in the 18th century and bear strong resemblance to Islamic architecture.

Meidan Square was one of the most important trading posts on the Silk Road. This is where Meidan Bazaar is located, an underground arcade and pad to explore the old town and its history.

Stop At: Sioni Cathedral Church, 3, Sioni Street Old Town, Tbilisi Georgia

In the old town of Tbilisi on the right bank of Mtkvari is the Sioni Cathedral. Until 2004 the church was the seat of the Georgian Orthodox Patriarchate. The grapevine cross of Saint Nino is still located here. The annexation of Georgia was announced in the Sioni Cathedral on April 12, 1802. The Georgian aristocrats were forced to swear the oath on the Russian tsar’s crown by force of arms.

Stop At: The Bridge of Peace, Tbilisi Georgia

The Friedensbrücke is an arched pedestrian bridge over the Mtkvari. The 150-meter-long, covered bridge was opened on May 6, 2010 and connects the old town of Tbilisi with the Rike Park not far from the Presidential Palace. It is located between the Baratschwili and Metheki bridges and was designed by the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi.

Stop At: Anchiskhati Basilica, Loane Shavteli, Tbilisi Georgia

The Anchishati Church is a three-aisled basilica from the 6th century and thus the oldest church in Tbilisi. The original name of the church is unknown and the church got its current name from the miraculous savior icon of the Antschi Church in South Georgia that was brought here. The icon was created using hot wax (encaustic) according to the old Byzantine technique and can now be seen in the State Museum of the Arts of Georgia in Tbilisi.

Stop At: Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theater, Shavteli St., 26, Tbilisi 0105 Georgia

In 2010, Rezo Gabriadze built a unique clock tower next to the puppet theater in the old town of Tbilisi. Every hour an angel comes out with a small hammer to ring the bell.
In the tower there is a small puppet theater and twice a day at noon and at 7 pm there is a show – “The Circle of Life”.
Rezo decorated the tower with hundreds of tiles he designed himself and it immediately became a major architectural attraction of Tbilisi. People often call it the tower with a clock or the tower with an angel.

At the end of our tour we will take you along the old city wall to Freedom Square, one of the most popular places in the city. Here you will find the fascinating architecture of the XIX-XX centuries. Hotels, shops, banks, the Tbilisi City Assembly and museums are all around Freedom Square.
