Pass By: Abanotubani, Abano St, Tbilisi Georgia
Abanotubani is a unique district of sulfur baths in the center of Tbilisi. Here you can see neat domes almost at ground level and, most importantly, experience the healing effects of natural sulfur springs. The first baths appeared here as early as the 16th century, however, according to legend, the city itself owes its foundation to the sources (they “warmed” in Georgian warm, as well as the sources).

Anchiskhati – Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary – the oldest building in Tbilisi from the surviving to this day. The church was built in the 6th century. after the transfer of the capital of Georgia to Tbilisi in the then common style of the basilica. The temple cannot boast of exquisite decor – rather, it is very simple in decoration, but its “experience” is more than 1500 years!

Narikala fortress or Unapproachable – “soul and heart of Tbilisi”, the most famous and ancient monument of antiquity. It rises on the crest of Mount Mtatsminda, which offers magnificent views of the city. The emergence of this citadel is attributed to the IV century. AD In the XIX century, the lower bastions of the fortress were demolished, and the earthquake of 1827 destroyed the fortress, which has not been restored since then.

Built high on a rock of the same name on the banks of the Kura River, the Metekhi district belongs to the oldest places of human settlement in Georgia. Metekhi Castle is an old citadel and the residence of Georgian kings, which gave the name to the district of the city, literally translated from the local dialect as “the vicinity of the palace.”

The end point of Rustaveli Avenue, Freedom Square, despite its modest size, invariably becomes the arena of political battles. Sioni or Zion Cathedral is historically the main temple of Tbilisi, named after the Mount of Zion and consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Located on the banks of the Kura River in Old Tbilisi. It was built by order of the Byzantine nobleman Guram I in the 6th century, but destroyed by the Arabs. In the 12th century David IV The Builder erected a new temple here, since then more than once suffered and rebuilt.

The old city (Kala) or “dzveli kalaki” is located in the territory occupied by Tbilisi in the 12th century. Kala is divided into Zemokala – the upper city and Kvemokala – the lower city in relation to the Kure River at the foot of Mount Mtatsminda. It is characterized by narrow cobblestone streets running up and down, and typically medieval brick and clay buildings.
