Stop At: Nonnberg Convent, Nonnberggasse 2, Salzburg 5020 Austria

Nonnberg Abbey was founded in 712 and is today the world’s oldest Christian convent with an uninterrupted tradition.

Outdoor shots can be seen at the beginning of the film.

Stop At: Salzburg Cathedral, Kapitelplatz 2, Salzburg 5020 Austria

Sound Of Music relevance: In the pedestrian zones of the old town of Salzburg, some outdoor shots were taken: at Residenzplatz with the “most beautiful baroque fountain north of the Alps” and at the cathedral square.

The interior of the Salzburg Cathedral was not visible in the film, but you should not miss a look into the baroque church together with your guide!

Stop At: Kapitelplatz, Kapitelpl., 5020 Salzburg, Austria

The Kapitelplatz offers great views of the fortress and the cathedral.
Thanks to the baroque “Kapitelschwemme”, once used as a water trough for horses, one feels transported to Italy!

Market stalls in the square offer souvenirs and some sweets.

Stop At: Fortress Hohensalzburg, Moenchsberg 34, Salzburg 5020 Austria

From the 11th century Hohensalzburg is one of the largest and best preserved fortresses in Europe. If Napoleon had not come, it might never have been conquered.

The entrance fee includes the ascent and descent with the funicular, a 30-minute audio guide and access to the spectacular Gothic prince rooms. Also spectacular is the view of the
city and mountains.

Stop At: Schloss Frohnburg, Schloss Fronburg, Hellbrunner Allee 53, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Frohnburg Castle was built in the 17th century and today houses part of the Mozarteum University.

SOM relevance: In the film it represents the front of Villa Trapp.

Stop At: Schloss Leopoldskron, Leopoldskronstrasse 56-58, Salzburg 5020 Austria

Leopoldskron castle is a former archbishop’s summer residence from the 18th century and is now used as a hotel.

SOM relevance: The building with its idyllic gardens and terraces on the Leopoldskroner Weiher represents the back of the Trapp-Villa.

Today, you can admire the Sound of Music gazebo at Schloßpark Hellbrunn.
It was taken to Schloß Leopoldskron for the filming.

Located in the south of the old town, on the historic Nonntaler main
street, is the more than 300 year-old Erhard church.

SOM relevance: Its Baroque façade and the neighboring house can be seen on a Sound of Music carriage ride.

Stop At: Mozartsteg, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

By the end of 1920, the pedestrian bridge opened in 1903 was subject to a toll. Enjoy from the eastern shore one of the most beautiful views of the river Salzach, the old town and the fortress Hohensalzburg.

SOM relevance: Or do a little dance here, like Julie Andrews did in the movie Sound of Music!

Stop At: Mozartplatz, Motzartplatz, Salzburg 5020 Austria

Admire the monument to the most famous son of the city here: the Mozart monument with baroque buildings and alpine peaks in the background is one of the most popular photo opportunities in Salzburg.

Stop At: Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

This place, named after the famous Salzburg conductor Herbert von Karajan (+1989), is home to another baroque horse-back, and offers great views of the festival houses, the Peterskirche and the fortress.

SOM relevance: This square was used for an outdoor shoot.

Stop At: Museum der Moderne, Mönchsberg 32, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

The Mönchsberg, which can be reached via a 30-second lift ride, offers fantastic views of the old town and fortress all the way to the Alps in the distance.

SOM relevance: It was the beginning of the Sound of Music-“Do-Re-Mi-” scene.

Stop At: Mirabell Palace and Gardens, Mirabellplatz 4, Salzburg 5020 Austria

“Mirabell” means “beautiful view”, and hardly any view of the old town and its fortress is more beautiful than this palace from the early 17th century.
Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had it built along with its beautiful gardens for his secret wife Salome Alt as “Schloss
Altenau”.

SOM relevance: Numerous singing and dancing scenes with ‘Maria and the Trapp children’ were filmed here.

Stop At: Lake Wolfgang, St Gilgen 5340 Austria

The crossing by ferry to the world famous “Weisses Rössl vom
Wolfgangsee” will delight everyone. Drive like ‘Maria and the Trapp
children’ with the spectacular (steam) cog railway in 35 minutes to the 1,782 meters (5,840 ft.) high prospective Schafberg.

SOM relevance: Lake Wolfgangsee can be seen in the aerial photographs in the Filmintro.

On the scenic route from Lake Wolfgangsee to Mondsee, we drive along the shore of the lake of the same name, just like ‘Maria and the Trapps’.

Stop At: Basilika St. Michael, Kirchengasse 1, Mondsee 5310 Austria

The Roman Catholic Basilica Mondsee replaces an earlier building from the early 12th century and fascinates with its gothic-baroque decor.

SOM relevance: The famous Sound of Music wedding was filmed here.

Stop At: Felsenreitschule, Hofstallgasse 1, Salzburg 5020 Austria

This venue was hewn directly into the Mönchsberg in the late 18th
century. It was used as an archiepiscopal summer riding school. With a capacity of 1,437 spectators, it is today one of the most important concert halls in Salzburg.

SOM relevance: The famous “Edelweiss-” song was shot here.

The visit of the interior is only possible as part of a 1-hour guided tour (usually only once a day).

Stop At: Petersfriedhof, Sankt-Peter-Bezirk 1, Salzburg 5020 Austria

If you look around the beautiful cemetery of the Archabbey of St. Peter (founded around 696), you will notice that the escape scene at the end of the movie was not filmed here (but in the 20th Century-Fox Studios in Hollywood).

SOM relevance: However, one of the cemetery chapels was used for an interior shot.

Stop At: Marktschellenberg, Marktschellenberg, Upper Bavaria, Bavaria

(OPTIONAL):
On the way to Roßfeld we pass Marktschellenberg.

SOM relevance: On a spectacular meadow high above this Bavarian village, one of the most famous dance scenes in the Alps was shot with Julie Andrews.
Please note that the meadow and its surroundings are now privately owned and therefore access is not always possible. Furthermore, to get to the top of the meadow, a very steep ascent and descent of 25 minutes each would be required.

Stop At: Rossfeld Panoramastrasse, Berchtesgaden National Park, Berchtesgaden, Bavaria Germany

The construction of this magnificent panoramic road road was started in 1938, it was completed in 1955.

SOM relevance: At 1,600 meters (5,250 ft.) height, we find the location of the final scene of the film with its great views.
However, nobody will reach the Swiss border as simply as in the movie!

The toll fee is € 8.50 for your entire group, regardless the number of people.
