Mycenae palace (Ancient Greek: Μυκῆναι or Μυκήνη, Mycēnē) is an archaeological site near Mykines in Argolis, north-eastern Peloponnese, The Palace of Mycenae was the most spectacular built in the Bronze Age, although there are also ruins of nearby palaces like Tiryns. The Mycenaean architecture is directly influenced by the precedent Minoan civilization but bears lots of differences probably because of the cooler climate of Peloponnese. The most impressive feature of the Palace of Mycenae is the fortified walls around it, a characteristic that is totally absent in the Minoan world. The walls are constructed of megalithic blocks sometimes weighing as much as a hundred tons that are simply joined to one another without mortar and were usually called the Cyclopean Walls, as it was believed that the Cyclops, one-eyed giants, had built them.

The theatre of Epidaurus represents the finest and best-preserved example of a classical Greek theatre. Even by today’s standards, this monument stands out as a unique artistic achievement through its admirable integration into the landscape and above all the perfection of its proportions and incomparable acoustics. It was built in 330-20 BC and enlarged in the mid-2nd century AD. The overall 55 rows of seats rest on a natural slope and face the stage area set against a backdrop of lush landscape. The theatre is marvelled for its exceptional acoustics. Any sound on the open-air stage, whether a stentorian voice or a whisper, a deep breath or the sound of a match struck is perfectly audible to all spectators, even in the topmost row of seats, that is, nearly 60 m away. The arrangement of the stepped seating rows acts as an acoustic filter that deadens low-frequency background sounds, such as the murmurs of the audience, while amplifying the high-frequency sounds from the stage.

Palamidi castle You have just arrived to one of the most important and best-preserved castles in Greece, an exquisite example of Venetian architecture of the 18th century. The hill at which the castle is located was named after Palamidis, the hero of Homer’s Epics. It is said that, in 1686, the Venetian Commander-in-Chief Morosini envisioned the construction of the castle, whose architectural design was undertaken by governor Grimani. In 1715, just one year after its completion, it was occupied by the Turks and just one century later it finally came to the possession of the Greeks.
