Due to the island’s proximity to the caldera, Santorini features unique beaches, the most prominent of which are the Black beach and the Red Beach. Made out of two successive beaches, the Black beach lies on the southeast coast of the island and is laid with black volcanic sand. It’s red counterpart, is located near the village of Akrotiri, on the southernmost part of the island, at the end of a steep downhill path. Enclosed by huge red rocks and laid with volcanic pebbles, it is perhaps the most popular sight on the island.

Stop At: Akrotiri Archaeological Site, Akrotiri 84700 Greece

Close by are two of the biggest attractions of Santorini. The Akrotiri Archaeological Sight contains excavations of the ancient city with the same name, a Minoan settlement destroyed in the Theran eruption sometime in the 16th century BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato’s story of Atlantis. On top of a hill nearby, you will also find the Akrotiri Lighthouse. Although the interior is closed to the public, this imposing structure of the late 1800s offers an amazing view so make sure you have a camera with you!
