Day of meetings with tribal villagers and Raika shepherds who strive to preserve their activity camel herders. An emblematic animal of the deserts, for centuries a companion of life for the inhabitants of these arid regions, the dromedary (a hump) is mainly found in India, Saudi Arabia and Somalia. Modern technologies are cruelly threatening its survival: tractors often replace it, pastures shrink in the face of population growth.
Nevertheless, he is an idéla partner of these regions: his large feet (no hooves) provided with elastic pads protect him from the burning grounds, and at the same time preserve the ground that grazes without damaging it. The dromedary nibbles here and there the leaves of the trees and the brambles without ever denuding a plant, thus favoring the growth. Its milk has exceptional nutritional qualities, especially for diabetics. But 60% of the livestock has disappeared from Rajasthan in 20 years. In 2016, the Kumbalgarh region saw the population increase from 26,000 to 18,000! The preservation of the dromedary has become a national cause.
The Raika tribes were the only dromedary breeders in the world to banish and taboo the use of women’s wool or milk, and to eat meat. The animal is for them an integral part of the family. Veterinarian Doc Isle Kohler-Rollefso, the “Diane Fossey of Dromedaries”, who has been dedicating his life for 25 years to camels in Rajasthan, works closely with the Raikas, and has created a veterinary hospital in the heart of the Kumbalgarh area – Ghanerao. She lives on site, cares for sick animals every day, and has convinced breeders to diversify their activities. Several farms of fifteen to a hundred animals, are grouped into cooperatives for the manufacture of products from wool, milk, or dung (paper, soap, milk, ice cream, cheese and cakes, rugs, shawls … ).
You spend a large part of the day in villages and farms, with pastors and camels, at the time of milking, care or to accompany them in their pasture, before visiting the workshops.
According to your interests, you will be able to visit: a pretty little jain temple of the Xth century, a workshop of potters, the organic market gardening (the princely family of Ghanerao created for several years a bank of preservation of old local seeds), an association that promotes traditional arts with children
