What to Expect When Visiting Leh, Jammu and Kashmir, India

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Leh

Stop At: Leh, Leh, Leh District, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir
Once arrived at an altitude of 12000 ft in Leh, one is only expected to rest and keep drinking water. This day is dedicated to getting the travelers acclimatized so that they continue the journey with good fitness.

Day 2: Explore Leh

Stop At: Shanti Stupa Road 500 steps from Changspa Road, Leh 194101 India
To get more used to with the high altitude, we will take go to a place where we can take a bit of a walk with a magnificent view of an entire Leh town. We will visit Shanti Stupa and spot Stok Kangri, Khardung La and a whole Leh town.

Day 3: Visit Sumda Chun monastery

Stop At: Temple at Sumda Chun, Sumda Chun village, Leh India
Sumda Chun village is at a height of 3500 meters from the sea level and to date is only accessible by a trek of about 4 hours from the nearby road. Sumda Chun Monastery has been attributed to the period of Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo (957-1055) and is believed to be one of the three temples founded by him in one night along with Alchi Monastery and Mangyu. The team will stay at Homestay at Skiu village. Sumda Chun has been electrified by the Global Himalayan Expedition in 2017.

Stop At: Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers, Leh India
On the way to Sumda Chun, stop at the NH1 to see the confluence of the beautiful Indus River and Zanskar River.

Day 4: Go farming

Stop At: Temple at Sumda Chun, Sumda Chun village, Leh India
Today you will have a hands-on experience of farming with the villagers Farming at high altitude requires different skillset and precision. It is an exposure to know how life still exists without technology. The locals get only two to three months of the year for seed sowing and irrigation. Learn about these traditional techniques and participate in some activities like archery and cooking. The night will be spent in the homestay where you may request the owner to share some mountain stories.

Day 5: Trek to Sara – Markha Valley

Stop At: Markha Valley, Leh 194101 India
We will start a trek to the village Sara today. The journey will take you to one of the most beautiful paths in the world. You may learn ancient trekking and surviving techniques from our local guide. An authentic Ladakhi food will be waiting for you at Sara. You will rest and freshen up upon arrival. Our guide will take you to the village tour. You may again opt to work on farms with villagers. The night will be spent at the homestay at Sara.

Day 6: Trek to Skiu village

Stop At: Markha Valley, Leh 194101 India
Trek back via Skiu village situated on the banks of the beautiful Markha River. The villagers here are always busy with their cattle and farming activities. But happily make travelers part of their routine and cook some special local food. Don’t forget to check the local flour mill at the entry of the village.

Day 7: Drive back to Leh

Stop At: Hemis Monastery, Hemis India
After breakfast, drive back to Leh. Visit the famous Hemis monastery and Shey palace today. Hemis Monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist monastery (gompa) of the Drukpa Lineage, in Hemis, Ladakh, India. Situated 45 km from Leh, the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal.

Stop At: Shey Monastery, Indus River, Leh India
Shey was the summer capital of Ladakh in the past. The original palace was built near the Shey village by Lhachen Palgyigon, the king of Ladakh. The trip will be concluded in Leh post sightseeing.
