Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput Chieftain Rudra Pratap, who chose this stretch of land along the Betwa river as an ideal site for his capital. The most notable of the succeeding rulers was Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo, who built the exquisite Jehangir Mahal, A tiered palace crowned by graceful chhatries. From here, the view of soaring temple spires and cenotaphs is spectacular.

Complementing the noble proportions of their exteriors are interiors that represent the finest flowering of the Bundela school of painting. In the Laxmi Narayan Temple, Vibrant murals encompassing various religious and secular themes bring the walls and ceiling to rich life.

What to Expect When Visiting Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India

In the first half of the day, we will leave Khajuraho for Orchha. After two hours, we will reach Orchha.

Stop At: Jahangir Mahal, Bhadbhada Road, Orchha 472246 India

On arrival, your first stop will be at 17th century monumental palace Jahangir Mahal, formed in the memory of Emperor Jahangir. The palace is a marvellous beauty designed with delicate chhatris (elevated pavillions) and exquisite work of trellis.

Stop At: Raja Mahal, 16 Km from Jhanshi, Orchha India

Later take a look of Raj Mahal, another stunning palace of 17th century crowned with chhatris. Its architecture is intricately designed with murals featuring various religious elements. Next is a visit to Rai Praveen Mahal. These two-storeyed brick-built palaces is a formation in commemoration of 16th-century poet and musician. The major attraction of this palace is the prismatic sun rays slipping in the main hall and other chambers of the palace through the exquisitely carved recesses. The view will leave you awestruck.

Stop At: Chaturbhuj Temple, Near Laxminarayan Temple, Orchha 472246 India

Later move to visit the Chaturbhuj Temple with your guide. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his ‘Ramavtar’ this temple is standing on a huge rectangular stone platform. The exterior of the temple is simply ornamented with two large and four small spires. Interior of the temple is decorated with richly carved designs on the wall. It will be a lifetime experience to visit this temple for the attainment of divine and peace.

A flagstone path links this temple with the Ram Raja Temple. The style is an interesting synthesis of fort and temple moulds. The interiors contains the most exquisite of Orchha’s wall paintings. Covering the walls and ceiling of three halls, these murals are vibrant compositions and cover variety of spiritual and secular subjects. They are in an excellent state of preservation, with the colors retaining their vivid quality.
