The Gateway of India is an arch-monument built in the early twentieth century in the city of Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Banganga or Banganga Tank, refers to an ancient water tank that forms part of the Walkeshwar Temple Complex in Malabar Hill area of Mumbai in India revered by Hinduism. The origin of the tank lay shrouded in Hindu myth, related to the Hindu god Rama. The site has a reputation for medicinal abilities and purification.

Founded in 1871, the market was initially known as ‘Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Market’. It got the name ‘Crawford Market’ after city’s Municipal Commissioner, Arthur Crawford. The construction of the market building was completed in 1869 and businesses commenced in 1871.
