Dakshineswar Temple – A true devotee of the Goddess Kali, the Hindu Goddess of ‘Shakti’, Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa had made this his home. Considered to be among the holiest of Hindu temples, the Dakshineswar Temple is visited by thousands of pilgrims from all strata of society.

Kalighat Temple – one of the important pilgrim centres for the worshippers of the Mother Goddess. There is an interesting legend behind the formation of Kali Temple, which suggests that when Lord Shiva was furiously performing his dance (Pralay), keeping the corpse of Goddess Kali on his shoulders, his spinning wheel sliced off her dead body. Her body slices fell off at different points, where pilgrimage centers were formed later on. Kalighat temple is one such pilgrimage spot, where a toe of her right foot had fallen.

Victoria Memorial – The monument which draws the largest crowds to Kolkata is the Victoria Memorial, dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria. It houses an excellent collection of British Raj memorabilia including paintings and manuscripts. The foundation stone of this domed structure was laid by the then Prince of Wales (later King George V) in 1906.

The Indian Museum is the largest and oldest museum in India and has rare collections of antiques, armour and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies, and Mughal paintings. It was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, in 1814. The founder curator was Dr Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist. It has six sections comprising thirty five galleries of cultural and scientific artifacts namely Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. Exhibits of the museum include dinosaur skeletons, replica of the 2nd century BC Barhut Stupa, etc. In the must watch category, we have the 4,000-year-old Egyptian Mummy and the urn that is said to contain the relics of the Buddha.
