After a short drive from your hotel, walk up Punthuk Setumbu, a hill about four kilometres from Borobudur Temple, to wait for the sunrise. As the morning mists disperse, the sun’s first rays will light up row upon row of some 432 serene-faced Buddha images and statues staring out over the surrounding rice fields and distant mountains.

After the sunrise, take a leisurely bicycle ride through the villages of Borobudur. Meet the local people en route and students going to school. Visit a traditional market and cycle through the paddy fields with Borobudur Temple in the distance.

At Klipoh village, stop to see the pottery making process, and even try your hand at making a pot. Pop into a local house to see tofu-making and batik painting, and to sample local snacks.

Cycle a little further to where a vehicle will take you back to the hotel, or, continue the whole way back by bicycle if the morning’s sites have really energized you.
