What to Expect When Visiting Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia

Cooking class, a hands-on and exclusive experience: learn how to make authentic Sumatran and Indonesian dishes using traditional spices at Restaurant Omlandia in Hotel Deli River, Medan, North Sumatra. You will visit our garden full of herbs and spices. Discover how Indonesian spices grow and use daily in the kitchen and as medicine.

Day 1 

(This activity can be easily combined with your tour on Sumatra at the begining or the last part of your tour. We can reverse the itinerary as well, it depends on your flight)

Kualanamu Airport – Hotel Deli River Medan (1 – 1,5 hours drive)

Arrive in Kualanamu airport with flight … at … (please let us know your flight number and arrival time). We will pick you up from the airport and bring you to Hotel Deli River for an overnight stay, nicely situated in the countryside outside Medan. In Hotel Deli River you can rejuvenate and rest after your long journey and take a dip in the infinity pool looking over the Deli River.

Day 2

Authentic Indonesian cooking class in Restaurant Omlandia at Hotel Deli River (duration 4 hours). The cooking class introduces you to tropical herbs and spices, as well as the exotic ingredients involved in traditional Sumatran and Indonesian cuisine. Through a hands-on experience you will be guided to make a range of traditional dishes, supported by our experienced Chefs.

In the morning after breakfast we will introduce you to our garden where Indonesian herbs and spices grow.   If the weather permits we will perform the class in the middle of our very own spice garden. You will learn the names and how we use them in the Indonesian kitchen. 

You will ground these spices in a traditional Indonesian mortar and pestle (batu giling) which has been used since ancient times to prepare ingredients or and spices by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder in the kitchen.  

After the cooking lesson you will enjoy the excellent lunch which you have learnt to prepare by yourself!

The rest of the day is at your own program. You can continue your journey to your next destination.
