In Banyumulek village, making pottery is a job that has been done for sasak Lombok tribe for generations. The job has been able to move the village economic wheel and attract many visitors and buyers to come to this village.

banyumulek villageWhen you’re entering Banyumulek village, you will be welcomed by a green gate which says ‘Banyumulek, Pottery Centre’. Even the school and local government offices are decorated by huge potteries in the gate fence. These decorations strengthen even more that Banyumulek is a pottery centre.

Along the street, many Lombok galleries can be found in right and left side of it. All you have to do is just choose which one you want to visit. Amongst them, there is a major gallery you can find, where your eye will be spoiled by the various kinds of Lombok pottery with various shapes, size, color, functions, and uniqueness. Some of them are egg-shaped earthen pot, sand flower vase, sand flat vase, chicken-shaped bank, jar, lampshade, and various of wall decorations in many size.

According to a local people, the special stuff of the village is the thief kettle (kendi maling). In Indonesian, maling means thief. The name thief was given because to fill the kettle, you have to do it from a hole in the kettle’s bottom, like a thief who never takes a normal way. Even if the hole is in the kettle’s bottom, the water will not come out if the kettle is put like any other kettle. The kettle has been perfectly designed so the water will not come out from the bottom hole.

Only by using simple tools and clay, the craftsmen in this village are able to produce such magnificent, useful product.

The creative industry of Banyumulek cannot be separated from natural support around the Lombok village. In this village, there are many clays and water as materials to make pottery. For the colorant, they use natural colorant such as cooked tamarind grain. Nevertheless, they also use synthetic colorants which are bought from surrounding areas.

Weaved cloth is one of traditional arts of Lombok island which has special and distinct beauty. You can find that when you’re in Sukarara village and you will hear traditional weaving tool, not a machine. This village indeed is a village which already wide known as traditional weaved cloth producer in Lombok island. The life of the people is mostly filled by operating the traditional tool to weave. They produce various kinds of merchandise, such as cloth, dress, table cover, blanket, and scarf with high quality and beautiful motifs. Due the high quality product they produce, their village has been widely attract many visitors, local or foreign.

weaving sukarara villageIn Sukarara village you may find many women are work as a weaver. It used to be a myth that a man will get infertile if he weave. But the myth is started to be left behind and now many men are work as a weaver. The men usually weave for tenun ikat (string weave) while the women usually weave for tenun songket (weave which usually embroidered with gold /silver threads).

The material to weave such as cotton fabric, nylon, silk, silver thread and mersis thread usually imported from outside Lombok. While for the color, they still use traditional material such as seed of tamarind, turmeric, mahogany bark, and betel vine leaf. But there are some threads that already colored with special colors.

If you want to buy weaved cloth from this village, you will have so many motifs you have to choose. But the most famous motif and becomes an icon of this village is the subahnala motif. This motif’s name came from Arabic language. According to local story, when the weavers were weaving this kind of motif, that repeatedly saying ‘subhanaallah’. The word is mentioned because it is hard to weave this motif and it took a long time to make it.
Beside subahnala motif, there are other motifs too such as Keker, Serat Penginang, Cunglik and so on.

If you want to feel religious harmony symbol, you can meet it at Lingsar temple. This temple is considered to be a symbol of harmony between Hindu Bali Lombok and Islam Sasak Lombok. This temple was built in 1714 by comer from Bali and has been renovated.
lingsar templeBefore entering this Lombok temple, you will pass a garden with twin pools inside which filled with lotus. Lingsar temple consists of three main building, which are gaduh, kemaliq, and pesiraman. Gaduh is a sacred place for Hindu. Inside, you can see four junctions which symbolize god who dwell two mountains. The junction in the east side was built to worship god in Rinjani mountain. The junction in the west side, was built to worship god in Agung mountain. Between those two junctions, there are two united pesinggahan (stopover) which is symbolize the combination between the junction in Rinjani and Agung mountain.
If you’re stepping down the stairs in front of gaduh, it will lead you to kemaliq door. This area is a sacred place according to Islam wetu teachings. But Hindu people are allowed to pray in this place.

In kemaliq area, there is a small pond which dwells by a tuna fish which considered to be sacred. Allegedly, it is an incarnation of Datuk Milir’s stick, a king of Lombok island who meditated in this place to request for rain. Hindu and Islam people in Wetu Telu believe that if you see this tuna fish, you will get lucky. For that, you can bring boiled egg to invite it. In this small pond, you could also make a wish and throw a coin in the pool with the hope that your wish will come true.

In the other side, which only bordered by a wall, there are nine fountains which flow from the small pond.lingsar temple lombok For fountain still in Kemaliq area, while the other five in Pesiraman area. This place is used to purify ourselves. The fountains are believed can heal many illness.

If you visit this place at full moon in the 6th month of Saka (The Hindu’s calendar), or around October or December, you will able to see perang topat (a type of rice cake wrapped in woven coconut leaves). This ritual is a part of Pujawali ceremony (temple’s birthday). Perang topat is purposed to beg for rain and prosperity. Basically, this ceremony tends to be Hindu Bali way, but the use of ketupat is the Islam people’s characteristic.

If you’re satisfy to see the temple all around, try to move to the south side of the temple. There are some berugak (gazebo) next to the main pool, which is the biggest pool in this Lombok temple.

The Islamic Center Mosque, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara is a charm of worth visit tourism. The mosque building that spent hundreds of billions was established to unify Muslim community on the island of thousand mosques (Lombok).

This mosque was built since the leadership of Governor, TGB. M.zainul Majdi, and it was inaugurated on December 15, 2013. The Islamic Center Mosque combines the characteristics of traditional Lombok and Sumbawa buildings.

The mosque building was beautified with a 99 meter high tower which was adjusted to 99 names of Allah (Asma’ul Husna). The tower building is opened as a tourism object to watch the face of the city of Mataram from a height both during the day and night.

In addition, the other beautiful feature in the Islamic Center Mosque is its dome which is decorated by Sasambo motifs as typical of West Nusa Tenggara.

Around the mosque there are many garment and wood craftsmen who make any kind of souvenirs like clothes, key chains, pens and many more. There is also batik sasak samawa mbojo (sasambo) Islamic Center motif, as well as other accessories.

The Islamic Center Mosque will become an icon to attract tourists to visit the city of Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara in Lombok island.
