On the stretch of west coast of the island of Capri, between the Blue Grotto and the Punta Carena lighthouse, there are the forts of Orrico, Mesola (also called di Campetiello) and Pino. Together with the Fortino del Tombosiello, reachable with a short detour from that of Pino, and the towers of Damecuta and della Guardia, the three forts constituted the defensive system of the island of Capri. The Fortino di Orrico is one of the most significant places in the history of Capri. It was precisely in this locality that on 4 October 1808 Gioacchino Murat attacked the island of Capri with a fleet of about 2,000 men commanded by General Lamarque to snatch it from English domination.
