Amalfi is a city in a suggestive natural environment under the steep cliffs on the south-western coast of Italy. Between the IX and XI centuries, it was the seat of a powerful maritime republic. In the heart of the city, the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, of the Arab-Norman era, is characterized by a Byzantine striped façade. The Arsenale Museum of Amalfi is a medieval construction site now an exhibition space.
