Pass By: Piazza del Gesu Nuovo, Piazza del Gesu’ Nuovo 2, 80134, Naples Italy
Piazza del Gesù Nuovo is one of the most important, famous and symbolic squares of the historic center of Naples.
The square, which owes its name to the church of the same name there, is located on the lower decumanus.
Its central position with respect to the historic city center places it within walking distance of other important historical sites.
In fact it is close to important streets of the city such as via Toledo, piazza Dante, piazza Monteoliveto and piazza San Domenico Maggiore.

The Sanseverino palace was built in 1470 by order of Roberto Sanseverino, prince of Salerno. Following the confiscation, which took place in 1547, it was donated to the Jesuits who began its renovation in April 1584, leaving only the rusticated façade (pointed stones) and the base intact. Over the years, various chapels and works of art were added, creating a unique blend of architecture and art.

The church and the monastic complex of Santa Chiara were built between 1310 and 1340 at the behest of Robert of Anjou and Queen Sancia near the western walls, at the beginning of the lower decumanus (today S. Biagio dei Librai, or Spaccanapoli).
The church was originally built in Provençal Gothic style by Gagliardo Primario, but was extensively renovated in the Baroque style between the 17th and 18th centuries. After the bombings that hit it heavily in 1943, and a fire that destroyed it almost entirely, it was restored to its original appearance with a restoration completed in 1953.
The facade is sober and imposing, with a large central rose window. The bell tower, separated from the structure, was begun in 1328, but completed only in the 16th century, when it was also equipped with five bells; these, fallen due to the bombing of 1943, were put back in their place in 1949.

Spaccanapoli is one of the symbolic streets of Naples and is so called because it divides the ancient city in two, between north and south.
Commonly called the Decumano Inferiore, it is a long straight line in the historic center and, together with the Decumano Maggiore and the Decumano Superiore, it is one of the three main arteries of the original Greek urban layout.
Along the way there are numerous historic buildings, palaces and churches that are among the most important places of interest in Naples, but there are also many craft shops, clubs, bars and shops that contribute to making it one of the most famous streets.
To fully understand why the street is so called, you can admire the historic center from above, observing the view from San Martino al Vomero, thus noting how the split is clear and precise.

Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, one of the most characteristic and romantic of old Naples, with its obelisk surmounted by the bronze statue of the saint, surrounded, as in a sumptuous frame, by the great palaces of the Del Balzo family (later inhabited by the famous animator of the Conspiracy of the Barons, Antonello Petrucci), Casacalenda, Corigliano, Sansevero (seat of the di Sangro, the best known of which was Raimondo di Sangro, who was responsible for the embellishment of the famous Sansevero Chapel, notable for its works of art).

When we talk about Via San Biagio dei Librai we refer to the central section and the most representative segment of one of the most typical streets of Naples, the one that in the Neapolitan collective imagination is simply labeled as “Spaccanapoli”.
The name Via San Biagio dei Librai is due on one side to the Guild of Booksellers and on the other to a small 17th century church dedicated to San Biagio. In fact, the name of the street only remembers the characteristic vocation of the street, that of the booksellers. Among the various shops that began their business on this street, at number 31, there was also that of Antonio Vico, father of the Neapolitan philosopher Giambattista Vico.
