What to Expect When Visiting Roma, Lazio, Italy

Savor a 3-hour walking tour in the first district of Rome. Enjoy and learn about the three different styles of pizzas. Taste an old-style Italian soda. Enjoy the history and food of Rome exploring on foot. Visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Pope Francis gave his first blessing.
Pass By: Rione Monti, Centro Storico, Rome Italy

This food tour will be centered in Rione Monti, a district rich in historical monuments and churches, considered by many to be the prettiest, most characteristic and off-the-beaten-track neighborhood in Rome.

It is a hidden gem standing between Piazza Venezia, the Forum, and the Colosseum. Monti has an amazing medieval setting through a maze of lanes and alleys, with many small family-run shops, restaurants, and bars to explore. You will be guided step by step through this first and most ancient district of Rome through little alleys with ancient medieval towers, where you can still see the authentic parts of Rome. Enter local shops to savor authentic pizza with many different ingredients, shapes, and styles of baking. Learn about Italian-style soft drinks like Chinotto while enjoying the neighborhood, filled with Romans, discovering some cultural aspects of this area which has a lot to tell.

The first stop is at a 100-year-old bakery where you will be introduced to the pizza alla teglia cooked in a special baking tin. You will also learn about the three different ways of making Italian pizzas and their relation to history in this very charming bakery.

The second stop is in a deli, or gastronomia, as a local would say. Here you will taste pure, artisan ingredients used as toppings for the different kinds of pizza (margherita, capricciosa, etc.) and also learn which topping to add while baking and what goes on after. It will also be the right time to flavor the first typical Italian soft drink called Chinotto, made since 1932.

After the deli stop, we visit the heart of the Monti District for a historical stop where our guide will share information and anecdotes about this area of Rome. This is the neighborhood that is home to the Flavian Amphitheater, AKA the Colosseum.

The next stop presents sliced pizza alla teglia, cooked this time not in a tin but on oven flint rock. The next historical stop leads us to the most famous and largest Marian Basilica of Italy, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

The final stop on the tour will let you sit and stretch your legs in a wood oven pizzeria, where you can relax and enjoy the art of making pizza by watching the pizzaiolo – the pizza man.
