The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, commonly known as Saint Paul’s Outside the Walls, is one of Rome’s four ancient, papal, major basilicas, along with the basilicas of Saint John in the Lateran, Saint Peter’s, and Saint Mary Major.

Also known as the Basilica Eudoxiana, it was first rebuilt on older foundations in 432–440 to house the relic of the chains that bound Saint Peter when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem, the episode called “Liberation of Saint Peter”. Inside you will see the Michelangelo’s Moses (completed in 1515), while originally intended as part of a massive 47-statue, free-standing funeral monument for Pope Julius II, became the centerpiece of the Pope’s funeral monument and tomb in this, the church of della Rovere family.

The Basilica of Saint Mary Major is a Papal major basilica and the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome, Italy. The basilica enshrines the venerated image of Salus Populi Romani, depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary as the help and protectress of the Roman people, which was granted a Canonical coronation by Pope Gregory XVI on 15 August 1838 accompanied by his Papal bull Cælestis Regina.

The Pantheon, literally means all gods, was originally dedicated to every gods in ancient Roman time. Though the idea of having one church to worship all gods seems questionable, some people suspected that the building was surrounded by many gods’ statues and thus the name. Other people suggested that the building itself, the dome looks like the path to heaven. It does not sound like a proper name of the building but there was no other records of the naming of this basilica. Anyway, the Pantheon remained pagan until Emperor Phocas gave the Pantheon to Pope Boniface Iv in 609 and the Pantheon is Christianized. The Pantheon Basilica is dedicated to St. Mary and Martyrs since then.

Located in the ‘geometric centre’ of Rome Piazza Venezia was named after the Cardinal Venezia who, in 1455, ordered the construction of his own Palace (Palazzo Venezia) that later became the seat of the Republic of Venice.

Navona square is built on the site where the Stadium of Domitian, founded in 86 AD, once stood. It could hold approximately 20,000 spectators, which came here to see different athletic competitions. Erected in the centre of Piazza Navona, the Fountain of the Four was designed by Bernini in 1651. The four statues represent the most important rivers of the continents where Christianity had spread; the Nile, Danube, the Ganges and Rio de la Plata. In the middle there is an obelisk measuring (16 m), which had originally been part of the Circus of Maxentius, found in the Appian Way Regional Park.

The Vatican Historical Museum was founded in 1973 at the behest of Pope Paul VI, and was initially hosted in environments under the Square Garden. In 1987, it moved to the main floor of the Apostolic Palace of the Lateran where it opened in March 1991. The Museums do not only houses the extensive collections of art, archaeology and ethno-anthropology gathered by the Popes over the centuries, but also contains some of the Apostolic Palace’s most extraordinary and artistically significant rooms and the Sistine Chapel.

The Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, or simply St. Peter’s Basilica, is a church built in the Renaissance style located in Vatican City, the papal enclave which is within the city of Rome. The construction of the new basilica began in 1506, when the old basilica had been torn down, and was finished in 1626. St Peter’s Basilica can accomodate 20,000 people.
