Stop At: Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Turin Italy

The large square – formerly Vittorio Emanuele I – named after the Treviso Municipality which sanctioned the victory of Italy in the First World War, was built according to a clear neoclassical language starting from 1825, based on a project by the Ticino architect Giuseppe Frizzi. The buildings overlooking the square were bombed on several occasions, in 1942 and 1943.

The Murazzi, symbol of Turin’s movida, are the foundations of the historical Turin on the Po, like the Venetian ones, a renowned place for strolling and flooding. With Piazza Vittorio,Veneto the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I, the Gran Madre and the Monte dei Capuccini constitutes a unique landscape, one of the identity postcards of Turin.

A large street full of commerce, public buildings, churches and palaces. Designed in the late seventeenth century as it has remained until today, bordered by facades of uniform architecture and with two continuous portico systems. The street creates a unique perspective telescope, descending with the backdrop of the Gran Madre di Dio, and the hill and vice versa, ascending, with the austere backdrop of the Castle.

The heart of the historical center: a rectangle of uniform facades and arcades with Palazzo Madama at the center, on which the cardinal axes of the ancient city converge. Numerous metropolitan facilities and architectural excellences overlook the square: in addition to the Royal Palace, those of the Prefecture and the Piedmont Region, the Regio Theater, the Subalpine Gallery, the Torre Littoria, the Church of San Lorenzo and Palazzo Chiablese.

The square today of the Town Hall is used over the centuries as a market for herbs and grains, but is enriched with a monumental design that emphasizes the center of government of the city. In the mid-eighteenth century, a porticoed axis extends the square, occupying the area of the Roman Forum and qualifying the connection between the Town Hall and Piazza Castello. In the square the ancient functions are reproduced: a centrality that is renewed today with the events for or against the Municipality, with the “Luci d’artista”, with the market of local products.
