Itinerary

Stop At: Porto di Bari, 70123, Bari Italy

A local driver in a comfortable air-conditioned van will pick you up from your cruise ship dock and take you first to the charming city of Matera where you will mett your local guide and visit the two Unesco site – Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano. This is a truly unique experience among rupestrian (carved in the rocks) churches and houses that are actually partly carved out of the calcareous stone and partly built with blocks extracted from the rock.

Then you enjoy a stroll along the panoramic street that overlooks the canyon and wander through the ghost town that has been used as a movie set on several occasions. We visit one (or more) rupestrian church and typically furnished cave dwellings to get a feel of what life was like for a peasant family here up until the 2nd World War.

There is also the opportunity to visit the medieval and baroque part of the city, the belvedere, to view the city’s stunning skyline.

Matera is renowned for its bread and specifically its focaccio so, for lunch we suggest a quick stop for a tasty and filling focaccio!

We next travel to Alberobello where we visit the two old districts of Trulli – Aia Piccolo and Monti. You may then choose a wine and/or olive tasting or a quick stop in Polignano a Mare to enjoy the breathtaking view from the terraces upon the cliffs to the blue sparkling sea below. A perfect way to end a magical day out!
