The Basilica of San Domenico is one of the most important churches in Siena, it contains the relic of Saint Catherine of Siena, patron saint of Italy and Europe, within a splendid Renaissance chapel built for the occasion and frescoed by Sodoma and others. The church is also called the caterinian basilica due to its connection with the Sienese saint and some episodes of his life.

Unique for its particular and original shell shape, it is renowned throughout the world for its beauty and architectural integrity, as well as for being the place where the Palio di Siena takes place twice a year. The shape of the square is emiciclica, resembling a valve of an inclined shell towards noon, with nine segments defined by white bands on the terracotta flooring. Enclosed by the almost continuous curtain of buildings, eleven passages (once twelve) branch off, masked wisely by the use of the vaults and by the layered layout of the town.

San Gimignano rises on a place certainly inhabited by the Etruscans, at least from the 3rd century BC The hill was chosen for strategic reasons, being dominant (324 m s.l.m.) in the upper Val d’Elsa.

In the Middle Ages the city was on one of the main roads of the Via Francigena, which Sigerico, Archbishop of Canterbury, traveled between 990 and 994 and which for him represented the 19th stage (Mansio) of his itinerary back from Rome to England .
