Day 1: Auckland – Kauri Museum – Tane Mahuta (Giant Kauri Tree) – Hokianga Harbour

Stop At: The Kauri Museum, 5 Church Road, Matakohe 0593 New Zealand
You are going to know more about the remarkable story of The Greatest Tree in New Zealand, and visit the 5,000 pieces of golden, honey-coloured, kauri gum glow in this jewel in the Museum’s crown: the best and biggest collection of gum in the world.

Stop At: Tane Mahuta Walk, Sh12 Waipoua Forest, Opononi 0376 New Zealand
A guided tour of visit Tane Mahuta (the giant Kauri Tree more than 1200 years old) in Waipoua Forest by Footprints Waipoua.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Opononi, Opononi, Northland Region, North Island
(Optional) Sand Surfing – From the wharf at Opononi (7 minutes drive from The Heads Hotel), you can take the water taxi to the huge sand dunes of the north head. Surfing down the dunes on body boards is enormous fun. Sand surfing cost is $80 per person.

Day 2: Koutu Boulders – Rawene – Kai Iwi Sand Lake – Auckland

Stop At: Koutu Boulders, Opononi New Zealand
The boulders locates on the south shore of the Hokianga Harbour.The boulders are excellent examples of concretions : hardened nodules that form within sedimentary rocks. They are composed of the same material as the surrounding rock and they form when a cementing mineral binds grains of sediment into a cohesive mass. It has been estimated that the largest of the boulders may have taken 5 million years to grow.

Stop At: Kai Iwi Sand Lake, Kai Iwi Lakes Road, Dargaville New Zealand
The Kai Iwi Lakes are basin-type dune lakes created during the Pleistocene Epoch, which began more than 1.8 million years ago. They were formed by the accumulation of rainwater in depressions of sand. Underlying ironstone prevents the water from leaking away. Each of the three lakes is fringed with pure white sand and there are shallow areas that are ideal for swimming; you can also fish for rainbow trout or paddle a kayak. Pine forest gives the air a delightful tang. You can enjoy water activities at your own cost here.
