Tour 4 Option: Jewish Krakow Walking Tour (English, Spanish, German Mon-Sun 10:30am 11:30am 2pm 5pm):

A Jewish world without Kazimierz would be as empty as a body without a soul. In a different time, in a different Kazimierz, one of the greatest Jewish scholars to ever life said: “the aim of man is to search for the cause and the meaning of things”. Let’s follow his advice and go deeper into the history of the Jewish presence in Kraków.

Poland is a place where Polish Jews and Polish Catholics lived together side by side for generations. The Jews had been present in Poland and Kraków since the very beginning. Their population grew rapidly over time, thanks to the religious tolerance and social autonomy they were granted here. The Jews, who had been expelled from countries all around Europe, found their home in Poland.

Here, in Kazimierz, Jewish history quickened, both in terms of culture and learning. Up until the mid-16th century, there was no other place in the Jewish world more significant than Kazimierz. Even today, Jews from all over the world travel to Kazimierz and Poland to find roots of their spirituality.

By the end of the 1930s, the Jewish community of Kraków constituted about 25% of the city’s population. This vibrant and diverse community was almost totally destroyed during the Second World War.

Today’s Kazimierz is a very peculiar place. One can experience here many contradictory emotions at the same time: joy at discovering the rich history, culture and traditions of Polish Jews; sadness and nostalgia for the pre-war, lost world, and excitement while becoming a witness to the rebirth of Jewish life. It is here in Kazimierz where the biggest Jewish Festival in the world takes place being the best proof that life and culture is always stronger than death and destruction!

The significance of Kazimierz can be measured by one more thing. After years of communism, when the culture was suppressed and silenced, it was here where a cultural outburst took place. Today, Kazimierz continues to be a favorite place among artists and other free spirits.

Krakow is one of the most important cities in Poland. It is located in the south and is very close to its border with Slovakia and not far from the cities of Bratislava or Vienna. It is a city that enjoys a rich history and was deeply impacted by World War II. The Jewish neighborhood, (Kazimierz) and the old ghetto are the saddest and most affected areas or the city, where they are left as a reminder so that the atrocities of the past are never repeated. The Old Town (Stare Miasto) was one of the first places to be named a World Heritage site with its spectacular Market Square and St. Marie’s Basilica.

There are many guided tours in Krakow that give you the chance to get to know the city in 2 to 3 hours while walking to visit some of the most emblematic monuments and places the city has to offer. In addition to this, there are themed tours that have a more specific route centered around a specific place or topic, to visit Wawel Cathedral and Castle located on the banks of Vistula River are, without a doubt, some of the most iconic parts of this Polish city. Another interesting place to visit is St. Florian’s Gate, the old entrance to the Medieval city, with 8 gated doors and a total of 35 spires spanning its length. If you cross over the wall, you will come across the Krakow Barbican, a fort that is surrounded by a moat which was used to protect the ancient city. Other points of interest you should check out are the Collegium Maius, the Planty Gardens, Oskar Schindler’s factory, Bohaterow Square with the chair monument, which is very close to the city where the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka salt mines were located.

The best walking tour in Krakow is the one where you get to see the sites with a local guide who will help you to understand the context of the city’s history and those little-known details about the place and its people. You can choose to book a walking tour in the morning, afternoon, or evening. If you would like to learn more about other tours or walkers and their experiences, you can read their reviews to get a better idea of which tour would be best for you. Other cities that are also popular for travelers looking for a walking tour in Poland are Warsaw, Poznan, Wroclaw or Prague.
