First colonized by the Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by the Spanish, the territory was ceded to the British in 1713. In the layers of fortifications, there are remains of a 14th century Moorish castle and the Great Siege Tunnels, excavated in the 18th and 18th centuries. expanded in World War II.
