400 kilometers north we reach another amazing religious area where we’ll visit the sumptuous and impressive Cathedral: Santiago of Compostela, one of the most important pilgrimage places in the world. Here you will see the medieval streets packed of pilgrims who have just arrived on foot or by bicycle. Free time to visit the city’s historic district, the 11th-century Cathedral and the tomb of Apostle Santiago Zebedee (Saint James of Compostela).

The famous Marian Sanctuary of Fatima is without a doubt one of the most important pilgrimage centers in the world. Millions of people come here annually to pay homage to the three shepherd children who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the fields of “Cova da Iria”. Free time to attend Mass (optional), visit the Chapel of the Apparitions where you can see the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. We will also visit the Basilica where we can find the tombs of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco (the last two were canonized by Pope Francis on May 2017, thus becoming the youngest saints of the Catholic Church). As we continue, we will visit the modern church of the Blessed Trinity of Fatima, which seats 8,633 people and has an area of 40,000 m2. The church was designed and projected by the Greek architect, Alexandros Tombazis. You can shop for religious items for you, your family and friends.

The village where the three shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, were born and lived. It is here we will visit the limestone houses which belonged to their families who dedicated their lives to agriculture and the breeding of sheep. It was an isolated and poor area in the interior of Portugal but nonetheless very beautiful.

Compostela, the Galician city located in northeastern Spain, became the major center of pilgrimage in Europe after the mortal remains of the Apostle Santiago Zebedeu (Saint James of Compostela) were found in the 9th century, supplanting Jerusalem.
