The oldest church within the city that has been the seat of the Patriarchate of Lisbon since the early 13th century. It was partially rebuilt after several destructive earthquakes in Neoclassical and Rococo styles but saved some of its original Late Romanesque designs. Recent archeological excavations in the central courtyard revealed traces of Roman and Visigoth buildings as well as a visible part of former Moorish mosque.
