Canico Trip Overview
At 355 meters above the sea level you will have the first stop, at Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint, overlooking the beautiful and panoramic Funchal town. We drive towards the center of Madeira where you will find Curral das Freiras (Nun’s Valley) surrounded by tremendous mountains. Curral das Freiras was previously used at the 15th century, as a refuge for the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara. Before we reach the top mountain Pico do Arreiro, the 3rd highest peak, we will pass at Miradouro do Paredão with a spendid view to Curral das Freiras, and this area was subjectes to intensive reforestation works.

Situated in a deep valley and encircled by steep mountain slopes, the parish of Curral das Freiras is located 29 kilometres from the municipal seat of Câmara de Lobos. Most of the buildings in the parish overlook the main valley, with the steep hillsides encircling the parish used for the cultivation of cherries and chestnut trees.

Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 m (5,965 ft) high, is Madeira Island’s third highest peak.[2] Most days, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds. The air is fresh and clear and the sun is very bright. On a clear day it is possible to see the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, 30 miles to the northeast.
