Stop At: Boulders Beach Penguin Colony, Simon’s Town 7995 South Africa

Visit Boulders Beach which is home to a growing Colony of vulnerable African Penguins. Known as Jackass Penguins because of their distinctive donkey-like braying, and they’re the only penguins found on the continent. Their diet consists mainly of pelagic fish such as pilchards and anchovy, but they may consume squid as well. They can swim at an average speed of seven Kilometres per hour, and can stay submerged for up to two minutes. Colonies can be found from Southern Namibia all the way around the Southern African coast to Port Elisabeth, but few places offer as remarkable a viewing point as Boulders Beach. Unfortunately, commercial fishing and marine pollution have taken their toll on the colony. In 1910, it was estimated that there were approximately one-and-a-half million African Penguins; a Century later, the aquatic bird was classified as an endangered species. By 1982 there were only two breeding pairs remaining. Incredible conservation efforts have grown the Boulders Colony to over 3500 birds in recent years. You can experience walking with penguins or choose the wooden walkways which allow you to view the penguins in their Natural Habitat in a close Range.
