This itinerary has 2 full days of riding from the Elgin Valley through to Hermanus ending at the southern tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas. Riding is moderate to easy on country gravel and tar roads.

Depending on weather and wind conditions, we can also reverse this itinerary.

Itinerary

Day 1: Somerset West – Elgin Valley – Hermanus

Stop At: Peregrine Farm Stall, N 2 Highway, Grabouw 7160 South Africa
We’ll stop at the Peregrine Farm Stall in the Elgin Valley for their famous pies and coffee before we begin our ride to Hermanus.
Duration: 1 hour

Pass By: Highlands Road Estate, 75 Highlands Road, Elgin 7180 South Africa
We’ll traverse the Highlands Road to Karwyderskraal.

Stop At: Wildekrans Wine Estate, R43, Bot River, 7185, South Africa
Wildekrans Wine Estate is a picturesque 1 000 hectare estate tucked away in the beautiful Bot River Valley. We’ll stop at the farm where you can enjoy wine tasting and refreshments in the property’s cellar.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Karwyderskraal Road, Karwyderskraal Rd, South Africa
From Wildekrans we ride the Karwyderskraal road to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Die Plaaskombuis @ Hemel And Aarde Valley, Farm No 10, VREDE, Hermanus, 7200, South Africa
After a pleasant descent from Hemel-en-Aarde valley we’ll stop at the renowned Plaaskombuis for lunch.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Hermanuspietersfontein Wines, Hemel en Aarde Rd, Onrus River, Hermanus, 7200, South Africa
Our ride continues down the Hemel-en-Aarde trails and ends at Hermanuspietersfontein winery just outside Hermanus where we have the opportunity to taste craft beers and local wines.

Day 2: Hermanus – Stanford – Elim – Cape Agulhas (Southern Tip of Africa)

Stop At: Stanford, Stanford, Overstrand, Overberg District, Western Cape
We’ll depart our accommodation in Hermanus and drive to Stanford where we will start the ride to Cape Agulhas
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Elim, Elim, Malagas, Overberg District, Western Cape
From Stanford we will ride scenic gravel road via Papiesfontein and then onto Elim. Elim was established in 1824 by German missionaries as a Moravian mission station. The village is picturesque and has changed little over the years. It is filled with whitewashed cottages, fruit trees and fynbos. All the roads in the village lead to the thatch roofed church.

Stop At: Black Oystercatcher Wine, R317, Bredasdorp 7280 South Africa
We’ll stop at the Black Oystercatcher Wine Farm for lunch. They are famous for their gourmet burgers, craft beers and coastal wines.

The setting is ideal, looking out over the wetlands that form part of conserved Nuwejaars Wetland Protected Environment, and across to the rare fynbos on the Soetmuisberg mountains. The view is complete with the infinity pool situated next to the dining area.

Pass By: Struisbaai, Struisbaai, Cape Agulhas, Overberg District, Western Cape
We’ll pass through the fishing village of Struisbaai on our way to the southern tip of Africa.

Stop At: Cape Agulhas – Southernmost Tip of Africa, South Africa
From Struisbaai, our endpoint is almost in sight, the Southermost Tip of Africa where the mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

Also know as L’Agulhas, it was originally dubbed Cabo das Agulhas by the Portuguese sailors that landed at this point. It means ‘Cape of the Needles’ and was so named because of the jagged reef and it was one of the only places where true North and magnetic North (the compass needle) coincide.

Stop At: Cape Agulhas Lighthouse, Lighthouse Street, L’Agulhas 7285 South Africa
The L’Agulhas Lighthouse overlooks the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. These stormy seas and rocky coastline have claimed more than 140 ships over the years, perhaps most famous of which is the sinking of the HMS Birkenhead, where the concept of “women and children first” has since become known as the “The Birkenhead Drill”.

From here we pack up the bikes and luggage and return to Somerset West. On request we can arrange a transfer to your Cape Town accommadation.
