This temple has a really sad story. Before the temple was built here, there used to be Gilsangsa Temple is a beautiful temple with the sad background history. Actually before this temple took place, there used to be a fine saloon bar with the noble gardening for the high classed people. It had a reputation as one of the 3 saloons in Seoul city, but the owner was never happy. She had a lover in World War II, who was known as a great poet. They were so much in love with each other, but had to get seperated in Korean war, and could never meet in their lives. After donating her business site to the Buddhism, she was presented a Buddhist name, Gilsanghwa, which means a flower with the great fortune. Even though this temple is in the city, it looks like it is in the forest. The garden of the temple is perfectly in harmony with the temple buildings and the surrounding forest, and that makes this place so calm and beautiful.

The name ‘Gaesim’ means ‘mend the heart’, and just like its name, this temple has a sort of atmosphere that makes you relaxed and refreshed. Those architectures are meaned to be in harmony with the surrounding nature, as if it is just a part of the mountain. It is one of the unique concepts of Korean gardening, to make you live in the nature, rather than you own the artificial nature inside your garden.
