Day 1: Ayubowan Sri Lanka

Stop At: Munneshwaram Hindu temple, Munneshwarama, Chilaw 61000 Sri Lanka
Munneswaram temple is an important regional Hindu temple complex in Sri Lanka. It has been in existence at least since 1000 CE, although myths surrounding the temple associate it with the popular Indian epic Ramayana, and its legendary hero-king Rama. The temple is one of five ancient temples dedicated to Shiva in the region.

The bridge was first mentioned in the ancient Indian Sanskrit epic Ramayana written by Valmiki, wherein Rama constructed it for his Vanara army to reach Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the Rakshasa king, Ravana.

Jaffna’s major tourist attractions are the historic Nallur Kandasamy and other Tamil temples and the Dutch fort and colonial churches. Day 2: Eastern Edge Of Sri Lanka

Stop At: Kanniya Hot Springs, Trincomalee Sri Lanka
The story says that Ravana dug up these hot springs to do the last rites of his mother. Since then, Kanniya Hot Springs are used for performing last rights in Sri Lanka. Apparently, Ramayana mentions it as a part of Gokarna Tirth – another name of Trincomalee Bay.

Legend states that King Ravana, along with his mother, was a devout worshipper of Koneswaram. Ravana is also supposed to have created the hot springs of Kanniya as part of Thirukoneswaram, for the last rites of his mother. King Ravana was a legendary emperor of Sri Lanka who is believed to have lived over 5000 years ago. If this legend were to be true, then that would indicate that the temple was alive and thriving for over 5000 years.

Day 3: Ancient City Sigiriya

Stop At: Sigiriya, Sigiriya, Central Province
Many believe that King Ravana’s Alakamanda is symbolically represented by Sigiriya. It is believed that Sigiriya used to be one of the great king’s palaces. According to the records in the Palm Leaf Book Ravana Watha, Sigiriya was built under the directions that were given by King Visthavasa. He is father of King Ravana. The frescoes are also mentioned in the book. According to Ravana Watha, the blue hued lady in the frescoes represents the Yakka tribe and the other ladies represent the Naga, Deva and Gandabhbha tribes.

Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple.

Day 5: City On The Plain (Nuwara Eliya)

In the folklores, it says Sri Lankan demon King Ravana after abducting Sita, kept her hidden in this area and area was offered to Sita as a pleasure garden, the place finds mention in the Ramayana as Ashok Vatika. The area was named as “Sita Eliya” and “Sita Amman Temple” was built on the site.

Stop At: Sita Temple, Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
This colourful Hindu temple, 7km southeast of Nuwara Eliya, is said to mark the spot where Sita was held captive by the demon king Rawana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Rawana’s elephant.

Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple is built by Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka. The Chinmaya Mission is a Hindu spiritual organization engaged in the dissemination of Vedanta, the science of the self as expounded in the Vedas, particularly the Upanishads, and other important Hindu scriptures including the Bhagavad Gita. The Chinmaya Mission was established in India in 1953 by devotees of the renowned Vedanta teacher Swami Chinmayananda.

Day 6: Explore More About Ramayanaya (Ella)

Stop At: Ravana Ella Falls, Ella-Wellawaya Road, Ella 90090 Sri Lanka
The falls have been named after the legendary king Ravana, which is connected to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. According to legend, it is said that Ravana (who was the king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped princess Sita, and had hidden her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave.

Stop At: Divurumpola, Sri Lanka
Lord Rama is one of the Avatars of Lord Vishnu. Sita underwent the ordeal called Agni Pariksha, after her husband Rama had won the battle to liberate her. But when Rama finally met Sita and she bowed at his feet, her husband seemed to doubt her fidelity. He asked for a proof of her purity, as he wanted to get rid of the rumours surrounding Sita’s stay in Ravana’s palace. Sita was distressedd and protested her innocence. She resolved to undergo the a fire ordeal, the Agni Pariksha, in order to prove her faithfulness and connubial purity. Hence she asked Lakshmana to erect a pyre. When Sita plunged into the sacrificial fire and invoked the fire god Agni as witness of her innocence, Agni arose out of the burning pyre and lifted her from the flames and presented her unharmed to Rama, attesting to her purity.

Stop At: Ravana’s Cave, Wellawaya road Nature Exploration and conservation Society ,#37/2,kekunahena,opatha,Galle, Ella 90090 Sri Lanka
King Ravana kidnapped Queen Sita and brought her to Sri Lanka confining her to these caves. These tunnels gave ample access to quick and undisrupted travel and were the perfect gateway for King Ravana. The myth and reality of this epic story revolved around Ella. It is further believed that strong ties existed between Ravana and Ella.

Day 7: Ramayana Landmark Rumassala

Stop At: Kataragama, Kataragama, Uva Province
Some says that Lord Indra requested Lord Karthikeya to be present on the battlefield on the last day of the battle against King Ravana. This was to provide protection to Lord Rama. The Brahmastra of King Ravana which was to be fired on the last day would have weakened Lord Rama. So to offer him protection, Lord Karthikeya was present on the battle field. It is said that the brahmastra which was fired at Lord Rama for the second time was also rendered useless because of the presence of Lord Karthikeya.

Stop At: Ussangoda National Park, Sri Lanka
The history of this area dates back to the Rama-Ravana era. People believe that Ussangoda is the place where King Ravana’s airport was constructed and his big peacock shaped aircraft landed (Dandumonara).

Stop At: Rumassala, Unawatuna, Sri Lanka
During the Rama-Ravana war, Lakshmana was fatally wounded and reached the brink of death. With Rama feeling crushed and greatly aggrieved, Hanuman swiftly to the Holy Sanjeevi (Immor Mountain in the Dhronagiri range which was supposed to be a paradise for every type of miraculous herb on earth. But, when faced with the thousands of herbs, Hanuman lacked the knowhow to find the right herb. So, he used his godly strength to lift the entire mountain from its roots and took it to Rama so that Lakshmana could be healed.
When Hanuman was flying back to Sri Lanka, it is said the mountain overbalanced slightly and a piece broke off and fell, landing on the southern end of the island. There were also four other pieces that broke off to the north, the center, west and north west of Sri Lanka. There were pieces that fell in India as well. The rest of the mountain was safely carried back to Rama and was used to heal Lakshmana back to full health. Later the war was a victory and Princess Sita was rescued.

The Kelani Raja Maha Viharaya was connected with the epic of Ramayana in that Kelaniya’s Prince Vibhisana was befriended by Lord Rama of India in his battle against King Ravana of Lanka.
