Itinerary

Day 1: Negombo > Minneriya National Park

Stop At: Minneriya National Park, Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway, Minneriya 50150 Sri Lanka
If you want to view elephants in huge numbers, Minneriya National Park is the answer. It is a shelter to many flora and fauna including, sambar deer, buffalo, and crocodiles. This park is a treat to the eyes and therefore is a must-visit when in Sri Lanka. Morning safari is better for mostly bird watching & might few elephants. Also foe see many elephants gathering, evening safari is recommended. .

Experience The Gathering, a name given to the elephants that assemble on the banks of the Minneriya Reservoir during the dry season. The Minneriya gathering is the world largest grouping of wild Asian elephants at any given time.

View the famous elephants as they graze on the grasses growing on the tank bed. Perhaps youll spot any of the parks diverse wildlife, including deer, wild buffalo, grey langers, purple-faced leaf monkeys, porcupines, and assorted birds.

Built by King Mahasen, Minneriya Tank is useful for irrigation and agriculture. As the tank was very purposeful to the locals they named the King, Minneri Deviyo meaning God of Minneriya. A dam is built by Minneria River to build this Tank.

Day 2: Sigiriya > Dambulla > Negombo

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
Built in the 5th century AD, by King Kasyapa, Sigiriya boasted of a very elaborate and complex city plan; with a palace built on top of a humongous 200 meter tall rock. This architectural and engineering marvel is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, and one of the popular tourism spot since ages. It also has quite an interesting history, with numerous theories regarding its origin and use. Today, the ruins of the ancient fortress are surrounded by Sigiriya Village, which offers numerous restaurants and hotels suitable for just about any type of traveler.

Sigiriya is a must-see place for people with artistic bent of mind, with its numerous frescoes done in a unique yet distinctly Asian style. The women in the ancient paintings are as mysterious as they are beautiful. Also intriguing are the writings by tourists on The Mirror Wall, some said to be from as far back as the 8th century.

A travel to Sigiriya is incomplete without a visit to The Pleasure Gardens – a wonder onto themselves. The Gardens are home to the ruins of summer palaces, still-functioning fountains, symmetric pools and winding walkways opening up to a grand view of the lush forests.

For tourists in Sigiriya looking for an adventure the climb up to the magnificent Lion Rock is a must. With a grand total of 1200 steps to climb, it sure involves a bit of hard work, but the stunning view from the top more than makes up for it.

Stop At: Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, KandyJaffna Highway, Dambulla 21100 Sri Lanka
Dambulla Cave Temple is also known as Golden Temple of Dambulla and is the best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. There are around 80 caves out of which only 5 showcase the beautiful paintings and statues of Lord Buddha. The temple complex has a rich and engrossing history as it dates back to first century BCE. The architecture and design of the caves and rocks is mind blowing. The statues of Lord Buddha have been very meticulously designed and each is different from the other. You will have to take around 300 steps to reach Dambulla Cave Temple but once there you will realize that all the effort was worth it.
