Belihul Oya is a hidden beauty in Sri Lanka which is not much known by tourists. Belihuloya is a village in the Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. It is approximately 150 kilometers (93 mi) south-east of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 616 meters (2,021 ft) above sea level. Belihuloya, is derived from the Belih Oya (“Oya” being the Sinhala word for river), which flows through the area. Visit three waterfalls on this tour including the Bambarakanda falls which is the largest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Day 1: Colombo/Negombo – Belihuloya
Stop At: Pahanthudawa Waterfall, Belihuloya Sri Lanka
The breath-taking Pahanthudawa falls is situated 4-5km from the small town of Belihuloya in the Sabaragamuwa province in Sri Lanka. This waterfall creates a small but deep pool at the bottom which is said to be of immeasurable depth. A small hydro power plant too is being powered by this natural beauty. It is a must-visit place if you’re a waterfall lover and are travelling to the Sabaragamuwa area. The extra effort of walking a 100 meters through a small jungle won’t go as wasted. This breathtaking waterfall has always been a serene sight for everyone who enjoys the comfort of bluish waters.

Stop At: Adara Kanda, Sri Lanka
Adara Kanda (Lover’s Peak) is a mountain situated near Belihuloya in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. It stands at an elevation of 1500 m. The peak is very famous for hiking and camping. It is surrounded by picturesque views of the Sabaragamuwa Province including the Sabaragamuwa University and the Samanalawewa Dam. The mountain is also known as “Paraviyangala”. The hike up includes passing plots of pine, streams and displays the best of mother nature in its surroundings. A footpath also leads to a Buddhist monastery. The hike consists of both uphill climbing and walking on flat terrain.

Surathali Ella Falls is 60m in height, 2m wide and made up of three segments. It is named after a film that was shot in the area. Originating from the Sri Pada Reserve’s Ellamana mountain range (948m), the fall is created by the Kadawath River, which flows along Sabaragamuwa Uva and later into the Weli River. It is bordered by an untouched wildlife sanctuary.

Day 2: Belihuloya – Negombo/Colombo
Stop At: Bambarakanda Falls, Ohiya Rd, Kalupahana 90186 Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s highest waterfall, the horsetail Bambarakanda Ella Falls cascades beautifully from a cliff face amidst high mountains in the hill country, in Kalupahana. Ranked the 299th tallest waterfall in the world, it has an impressive height of 790 ft. A picturesque waterfall which is spectacular to see and it originates from Kuda Oya which is a branch of the Walawe River. This destination with endless panoramas of the plains is a perfect getaway for family picnics and excellent photography of nature and scenery. At the bottom of the falls, there is a natural pool in which one can enjoy a dip and swim for fun and leisure. There is an interesting trail/hike to the top of the falls for the adventurous seeking a thrilling hiking experience.

Stop At: Horton Plains National Park, Ohiya 22200 Sri Lanka
Horton Plains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated at an altitude 2,100–2,300 metres and located in Central Sri Lanka. It is a government protected area which is surrounded by massive cloudy forests and never-ending grasslands. Horton Plains National Park is a popular destination to visit the famed ‘World’s End Cliff’, a long, steep plunge of 880m where the plateau comes to a dramatic stop. Horton Plains is also the meeting point of three prime Sri Lankan rivers, and those are Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. The national park is home to many woody plants and of Sri Lankan Sambar Deers. The endemic species is a highlight of the park including the bird area. Thus, Horton Plains is a delight to the eyes and a visit to this incredible region will not only soothe one’s mind and body but also will lead to a fun trip within the mountains of green!
