Itinerary
Day 1: Colombo/Negombo – Kandy
Stop At: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
The striking sight of the Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Tooth Relic across the Kandy Lake is awe-inspiring. In August, the “Esala Perahera” is a colorful cultural pageant held in reverence of the Tooth Relic. The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is in the center of the city and was originally built by the Kandyan Kings between 1687 and 1707, in order to house and honor the sacred tooth relic. ‘Maligawa’ (Palace) literally translates to palace, and the temple is part of the palace complex.

Stop At: Kandy Lake, Centre of Kandy City, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
Known as the “Kiri Muhuda” (Sea of Milk), the Kandy Lake would touch the heart of nature lovers, as it serenely sits at the heart of the city. While walking around the lake, you can spot the fish who have made the lake their home. The lake was built in 1807 by the last king of Kandy and Sri Lanka, King Sri Wickrama Rajasingha, an man made lake epitomising a part that represents the final Sri Lankan kingdom. A characteristic of the lake is the unfinished wall called, Valakulu Bamma or the Clouds Wall. This wall couldn’t be completed because of the imprisonment of the king when the British took over in 1815. This wall gives notable recognition to the lake with its unusual patterns with triangular holes which are used to light oil lamps.

Stop At: Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue, Bahirawa Kanda Rd, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
Known as the Sri Maha Bodhi Maha Viharaya is camouflaged amidst the lush greenery, and a statue of a seated Buddha rise to the sky and can be seen from various points in the city. Climbing the numerous steps to the top gives one a sense of peace, serenity and harmony; and a stunning and gorgeous panoramic view of charming Kandy. Being one of the tallest and most beautiful Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and Kandy’s most revered religious monuments, this Bahirawakanda Vihara has become a popular attraction for tourists. The hill named as Bahirawa Kanda translates as ‘Devil’s Hill’.

Inbred with art and culture from the ancient Kandyan kingdom, Kandy plays an integral part of the country’s cultural identity with Kandyan dancing taking center stage as the National dance of Sri Lanka. Watch a cultural show and embrace the unique dance forms and styles. Kandyan Dancing lives on as an extraordinary feature of Sri Lanka’s culture gaining recognition as the National dance of Sri Lanka while drummers walk beside them pounding out heart-thumping tribal rhythmic beats.
Although the Kandyan dance was originally initiated for men, women today perform it with such pomp and pageantry for they have created their own style of costume and moves. Kandyan dancing flourished from spreading beyond Kandy for which it was named and has generated many dance schools throughout the island and overseas.

Day 2: Kandy – Sigiriya – Dambulla – Negombo/Colombo
Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
The towering rock outcrop of Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is one of Sri Lanka’s most spectacular natural landmarks: a majestic, sheer-sided outcrop of reddish gneiss rising 200 meters above the surrounding plains and embellished with the extraordinary remains. The rock has long attracted settlers. A community of reclusive monks lived in the caves around the base of the rock as far back as the 3rd century BC, though it was not until the 5th century AD that Sigiriya rose to sudden and spectacular prominence in Sri Lankan affairs. The patricidal King Kashyapa chose the almost inaccessible summit as the unlikely setting for his new royal palace, a courtly paradise of elegant pavilions set amid gardens and pools. The rock was transformed into an immense recumbent lion by the addition of a brick-built head and foreparts, of which only the artfully sculpted paws remain.

Stop At: Dambulla Cave Temple, Jaffna Hwy, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka
Dambulla cave temple also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, situated in the central part of the country. It is also believed to be home to prehistoric Sri Lankans as burial sites have been found with skeletons that are about 2700 years old. However, only after the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka did the caves flourish. It is traditionally thought that Valagamba of Anuradhapura had the caves converted into a temple. The temple has five caves and 157 statues of the Lord Buddha, many paintings on the ceilings and walls that emphasis the artistic talent of ancient days.
