Itinerary

Day 1: Colombo/Negombo – Kandy

Stop At: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Dalada Veediya, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
The most revered site in Sri Lanka, it is locally known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa and is a place of worship established in the 16th century AD. Situated adjacent to the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, the shrine overlooks the vast expanse of the Kandy Lake. Preserving the Relic of Buddha in this haven of refuge, it was declared that whoever houses and protects it is automatically given the power to rule the country. The artefact serves as a significant symbol of Sinhalese identity and pride. Everyday thousands of white-clad pilgrims make their way to this hallowed space, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani for their offerings and prayers, known as pujas. While the tooth stays hidden within a gold casket, visitors and devotees always visit the Temple during puja just to have a look at the well protected inner shrine where it is kept.

The Kandy Lake is a place where time stands still. Originally called Kiri Muhuda or Milky Sea, the lake was built in 1807 by the last king of Kandy and Sri Lanka, King Sri Wickrama Rajasingha, an man made lake epitomising a part that represents the final Sri Lankan kingdom. A characteristic of the lake is the unfinished wall called, Valakulu Bamma or the Clouds Wall. This wall couldn’t be completed because of the imprisonment of the king when the British took over in 1815. This wall gives notable recognition to the lake with its unusual patterns with triangular holes which are used to light oil lamps. People take pleasure in walking around the lake; sitting on benches and watching city life drift by.

Stop At: Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue, Bahirawa Kanda Rd, Kandy 20000 Sri Lanka
Bahirawakanda, called the Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya, is most well-known to tourists for its giant Buddha statue, which can be seen from almost any point in the city of Kandy. Built in 1972, the statue shows Lord Buddha seated in the Nirvana pose, which is the position associated with his first Enlightenment. Reaching a height of more than 25 metres, it is one of the tallest statues of Buddha in Sri Lanka. Bahirawakanda means “Gnome Mountain”, and this name harks back to the legends surrounding the temple’s hill.

Kandyan dancing is one of Sri Lanka’s most revered and iconic artforms and no visit to its city of origin is complete without watching a performance. Adorned with jiggling anklets, intricate beads, jingling bangles, elaborate headgear and vibrant colourful flowing costumes, the dancers perform spectacular acrobatic movements. Kandyan Dancing lives on as an extraordinary feature of Sri Lanka’s culture gaining recognition as the National dance of Sri Lanka while drummers walk beside them pounding out heart-thumping tribal rhythmic beats.
Although the Kandyan dance was originally initiated for men, women today perform it with such pomp and pageantry for they have created their own style of costume and moves. Kandyan dancing flourished from spreading beyond Kandy for which it was named and has generated many dance schools throughout the island and overseas.

Day 2: Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Kandy

Stop At: Post Office Nuwara Eliya, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
This British Tudor revival-style building is located in the centre of Nuwara Eliya, built by the British in 1894 and has a bell tower on the roof. Because the exterior of the building is made of red bricks, plus the white mud ash between the bricks, it looks pink in the distance, so it is called the pink post office. On the stamp of Sri Lanka dated 26 December 1990 to commemorate World Post Day, the Pink Post Office was printed on a stamp of 10 rupees. Nowadays, in addition to the functions of the post office itself, it has become a sightseeing spot.

Stop At: Nuwara Eliya Golf Course, Grand Hotel Road, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is one of the oldest Golf Clubs in Sri Lanka. Established in the late 19th century, it is located in the hill station of Nuwara Eliya. It is an 18-hole golf course. The Nuwara Eliya golf course was constructed in 1889 by a Scottish soldier of the Gordon Highlanders for the British servicemen and officials who were posted at Nuwara Eliya. The course covers approximately 40.5 hectares (100 acres) of land and was originally built amidst the tea plantations of this central highland region. The course is located at an altitude of 1,830 metres (6,000 ft) above sea level. It is an 18-hole, 5,851 m (6,399 yd), Par 70 layout – the scorecard is in metres however the distance from the yardage markers to the edge of the green are measured in yards.

Stop At: Victoria Park of Nuwara Eliya, A5, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka
The queen Victoria Park, established in memory of 60th Jubilee coronation of Queen Victoria is located within the city of Nuwara Eliya. Today the park covers an area about 27 acres. The park is ideal relax and enjoy the nature while strolling the vicinity. The park houses a wide range of trees and plants. Among them, 90% are foreign plants. The main features are the roses and orchids. The river running through the city is also crossing the Victoria park.

Stop At: Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka
Gregory Lake is a reservoir in Nuwara Eliya which is a popular tourist attraction with mesmerizing views and colorful, blooming flowers that lend the richest shades of beauty to its surroundings. Lake Gregory was constructed during the period of British Governor Sir William Gregory in 1873. If you are feeling more adventurous, there are swan shaped boats that you can ride on the lake or maybe trot around the gardens on a pony.

Day 3: Kandy – Sigiriya – Dambulla – Colombo/Negombo

Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka
Formerly King Kasyapa’s capital and palace, Sigiriya is a fine example of ancient urban planning. Hear mysteries of the fortress and its impressive construction. Stroll in some of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world and past unique features like the mirror wall. So highly polished was this, the king could see himself as he walked by. Over the centuries graffiti became commonplace – some, quite entertaining. Find small examples of colorful frescoes which once covered the western side of Sigiriya, or “Lion Rock”, derived from a plateau where once a huge stone lion sat, guarding the gateway to the top. See the remnants as you climb.

Stop At: Dambulla Cave Temple, Jaffna Hwy, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka
This eye-widening World Heritage Site, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is in central Sri Lanka, around 150 kilometers east of Colombo. It’s the country’s biggest and best-preserved temple complex, with more than 80 documented caves in the surrounding area. Key sights and sites are spread across five fascinating caves, decorated with statues and paintings that riff on the life of the Gautama Buddha. Keep your eyes peeled for three statues of Sri Lankan kings, four statues of gods and goddesses and more than 150 Buddha statues. Burial sites in the area suggest that prehistoric Sri Lankan’s lived in these cave complexes before Buddhism came to Sri Lanka.
