Stop At: Jungle Beach, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka

Jungle Beach is a secluded beach in Unawatuna that’s growing less secluded all the time. It’s still a nice and relatively peaceful Una beach off the main strip. Since this beach is not as crowded as the main beach, it is more tranquil and calm. Long walks on these sandy shores will leave you refreshed and relaxed. There is no great difficulty in reaching this beach because it takes only about 10-15 minutes from the town. As the name suggests, there is a forest right behind the stretch of beach.

Stop At: Japanese Peace Pagoda, Rumassala, Unawatuna 80600 Sri Lanka

The peace pagoda on Rumasalla Hill is one of four Buddhist peace pagodas in Sri Lanka. Stupas are monuments that serve as beacons of peace for people of all nationalities and creeds, and the clean, rounded design of the Unawatuna pagoda exemplifies this. Visitors can walk or drive the shaded path to the Peace Pagoda and they will be rewarded with a towering, white bell-like structure surrounded by gold-painted statues. Sets of steps also lead to a walkway encircling the shrine which offers a 360-degree view of the jungle and bay.

Stop At: Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya, Galle Sri Lanka

A sacred site wrapped in serenity, the Yatagala Temple (or Yatagala Rock Cave Temple) offers a rewarding insight into the island’s Buddhist heritage. Locally referred to as the ‘Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya’, this ancient rock temple dates back more than 2,000 years and was built during the time King Devanampiya Tissa ruled the Kingdom of Anuradhapura. The climb up to this hallowed temple is part of the experience and at the summit, you will be greeted by wonderful views of quaint hamlets and idyllic paddy fields. Among-st the fascinating features here are the massive boulders around the temple grounds some of which conceal ancient caves that have been used by monks for more than 1,500 years. A sacred Bo tree, a huge statue of Lord Buddha and intricate wall murals are a few of the other notable sights of interest at the Yatagala Temple.

With palm-lined beaches, turquoise waters and a good selection of guesthouses and restaurants, Unawatuna beach is very popular among travelers. The picturesque semi circular bay beach running no more than kilometer, fringed by groves of palm is terminated by rocky headlands at either end. Unawatuna remains impressive with its expansive stretch of white sand that meets the cerulean blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
