Stop At: Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, KandyJaffna Highway, Dambulla 21100 Sri Lanka

Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site Dambulla is a monastery with cave sanctuaries and is considered as the largest and best preserved temple in Sri Lanka. There are more than 80 documented caves with the 2000 feet temple premises, but there are 5 main caves that have the sculptures and paintings of Lord Buddha including the beautiful 45-foot sleeping Buddha statue. The temple has been used over 22 centuries but it still holds a sense of benevolence and spirituality. Visitors may climb up steps to the temple and the view from the top of the rock is as inspiring as the temple’s golden interior. It is also believed that this cave was home to pre historic Sri Lankans as skeletons were found which 2700 years old is. The statues and art found within the cave truly highlight the artistic abilities of those living in the past. It is well persevered and a walk through the caves will prove to be both insightful and a very memorable experience.

Sigiriya also known as Sinhagiri is an ancient Rock fortress built by King Kashyapa in the Century. Known as the 8th wonder of the world Sigiriya is named a UNESCO world heritage site due to its near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilization. Sigiriya Rock Plateu, was formed by magma of an extinct volcano which is 370 meters above the sea level. A series of galleries and staircases emerging from the mouth of a gigantic lion constructed of bricks and plaster provide access to the site.Its view astonishes the visitors with the unique harmony between the nature and human imagination. The fortress complex includes remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains.
