Stop At: Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress, Sigiriya 21120 Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Rock Fortress also known as Lion Rock is a private fortress and place of immense stature with a remarkably impressive design. King Kasyapa, who built Sigiriya Rock Fortress as a refuge after he killed his father to take the throne, devised a system to transfer water between the top and the foot of the rock, which is one of the most incredible feats of engineering in Sri Lanka’s ancient history – and in the world’s ancient history. Walk through the landscaped royal gardens, towards the base of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. These elegantly landscaped gardens, said to be one of the oldest in the world, are dotted with sparkling ponds, pretty water features, cascading fountains, meandering pathways and frescos in the Cobra Hood Cave, a rocky ledge in the shape of a cobra’s hood. The gardens reveal a trio of distinct forms including terraced gardens, cave and boulder gardens and water gardens.

Stop At: Dambulla Cave Temple, Jaffna Hwy, Habarana 50150 Sri Lanka

The cave temples at Dambulla are a series of caves dating back to the 2nd century BC. Once a refuge for Buddhist monks, over time the caves were inhabited and deserted with kings from both Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa who paid for renovations and added to the collection of art works at various periods. There is some evidence that the caves were used as shelters in prehistoric times. The last repainting is in the Kandyan style dating back to the 17th century. Drive part-way up the hill and then gently walk for about 10-15 minutes to the cave temples. Five large caves are adorned with 150 Buddha statues, paintings and well-preserved religious works of art. All the caves have been enclosed by man-made walls converting them into self-contained units.
