Stop At: Dondra Head Lighthouse, Light House Road, Dondra 81000 Sri Lanka

One of the iconic historical landmarks in the southern district would be the Dondra Head Lighthouse, when translated means ‘City of Gods’ is located on the southernmost tip of the island. It is a white octagonal brick tower with a height of 161m and is one of the oldest kept lighthouses. The lighthouse was designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglas, constructed by William Douglas of Imperial Lighthouse Service which started in 1887 November. There are 7 floors, 161 feet high, being one of Sri Lanka’s tallest lighthouses, and 196 steps to reach to the top. The view is fantastic as you get a view of the crystal clear ocean and a panoramic view of the bay of Matara lined with palm trees

Stop At: Hiriketiya Beach, Matara Sri Lanka

Hiriketiya beach is a great place to chill and while the days away and relax, swim, and watch the vibrant Sri Lankan sunsets light up the sky. The palm-fringed beach isn’t the widest nor the most golden-sanded in Sri Lanka, but the setting is magical and the water clear. Prevailing easterly or westerly winds are kept away by the horse shoe shape of the bay, making swimming and surfing conditions safe all year round. This small horseshoe beach is tucked away from sight, only a stone’s throw from the bustle of Dickwella Town but concealed by groves of lanky coconut palms and sea grapes.

Stop At: Wewurukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya, Beliatta Rd, Dikwella 81200, Sri Lanka

Wewrukannala Viharaya draws visitors from all over the country to see the giant Buddha statue, which at 50m in height, is the tallest in Sri Lanka. However, the most unique part of the temple complex is the Buddhist hall of horrors, a long corridor illustrated with ghastly depictions of Buddhist hell. The temple is divided into three parts, the oldest of which dates back to the 18th-century reign of King Rajadhi and has a more modest Buddha worked into the structure’s outward-facing architecture. The second element, the giant Buddha statue, was constructed in the 1960s when a penchant for larger-than-life roadside attractions took the world by storm. At 160 feet tall, it literally and figuratively rises above the quagmires of earthly life. Which leads to the third, most overlooked, aspect of Wewurukannala Vihara: in order to meet the big Buddha up-close, visitors must first navigate the Tunnel of Hell.

Stop At: Hummanaya Blow Hole, Kudawella, Tangalle Sri Lanka

Known to be the second largest in the world and the largest in Sri Lanka alone, discover the Hummanaya Blow Hole while you explore the southern coast.Enjoy scenic views of the beautiful blue coast as you trek along the pathway leading to the attraction. The blow hole attracts tourists from around the world to witness its magnificence. The Hummanaya Blow Hole is a natural wonder that sprays a jet of sea water into the air between two giant rocks; sometimes reaching heights of over 80 – 100 feet, and should be added to your list of things to see while you stay in Sri Lanka. The best time to see this is during high tide, as you can experience the salty spray on your skin as seawater jets towards the sky and falls back on its wide-eyed audience.
