The iconic ‘Mountain Temple’ or Kande Vihara in Aluthgama with the 48 m/160 feet seated Buddha statue is among the tallest in the world, with a bell-shaped stupa, ancient sacred bo tree and image house with complex floral and creeper designs that date back over 300 years. Thousands of devotees flock daily to the temple and obey the rituals. The temple gets the name ‘Kande vihara’ as it is placed on top of a hill. The temple was constructed in 1734 and has become most venerated places in Sri Lanka.
