Day 1: Negombo/Colombo – Galle

Stop At: Galle Fort, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
Built several years ago on a massive piece of land in Galle, the Galle Dutch Fort was used by the Portuguese until the Dutch took over it. The British finally sealed the fort as theirs with a lot of re-building and renovation. The unique blends that led to the standing of this monumental structure are now listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites thus deserving a substantial place on the list of places to visit in Galle.

If your life’s passion is driven by the history of the world, then the National Museum of Galle is ‘the’ place for you. It is amongst those tourist places in Galle that allows you to study the times gone by of Sri Lanka from the 4th Century. Starting from architectural designs, relics and masks, shells, wooden carvings and Beeralu Collection to other archaeological objects that take you into the deepness of this country is all preserved in this educative building. The influence of the Dutch in Sri Lanka can be witnessed through various items on display like the weapons and vessels.

Located on top of the Rumassala Hill offering splendid views of the entire ocean, the Japanese Peace Pagoda is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Galle, Sri Lanka. Constructed way back in 2004 and this massive white structure exudes purity and serenity. One can quite easily spot this structure from the beaches of Unawatuna and Galle and reach there by walking or driving through the hills. You should ideally visit this place at dusk if you want to witness a breathtaking sunset.

The default beach for those visiting Galle is Unawatuna, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Galle. While it is not ideal for surfing, it is a great location if you want to go swimming because of the calm waters. If you are interested in snorkeling or other water sports, you can head to Jungle Beach which is located only a short walk away. This is one of the day outing places in Galle.

Stop At: Dutch Reformed Church, Church Street, Galle 80000 Sri Lanka
The Dutch Reformed Church, also known as De Groote Kerk, is a church located inside the Galle Fort. Built-in 1755, it is the oldest Protestant church in Sri Lanka and continues to be in use today. The Dutch Reformed Church is mostly renowned for its fascinating interiors.This piece of colonial architecture houses interesting relics as a testament to its long histories, such as an organ, pulpit and stunning stained glasswork. Distinctive memorial tablets of former commanders of Galle serve as a reminder of the Dutch colonialists. A belfry whose origins lie in the early 18th century stands opposite to the church.Whether you have come to pray, marvel at the architecture or understand its historical significance, a visit to the Dutch Reformed Church will surely not disappoint.

Day 2: Galle – Wilpaththu – Negombo/Colombo

Stop At: Udawalawa National Park Safari, Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka
Udawalawe is not only famous for the elephants but also for other animals like leopards as well as various species of birds. It is estimated that there are only 10-12 leopards in this National Park and due to this reason there are very rare chances to spot them. There are so many Sri Lankan elephants because of the Udawalawe Reservoir. It is a very important source of water for them. There are approximately 500-700 elephants and so the chances of spotting an elephant are nearly 100%.There is a rich diversity in Udawalawe. There are 184 birds, 33 reptiles, 43 mammals and also 135 different species of butterflies. Other than leopards and elephants, there are even the chances of spotting water buffaloes, wild boars, crocodiles, peacocks and also spotted deer.
