Day 2: Negombo > Kandy

Stop At: Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya Road, Peradeniya 20400 Sri Lanka
Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, botanical garden in Peradeniya, near Kandy, Sri Lanka, noted for its rich and varied collections of tropical woody plants. Occupying 59 hectares (146 acres), it has about 4,000 species of plants. The most important specimens of the garden include palms, some of which are planted in impressive avenues. Significant, too, are the collections of orchids, gymnosperms, and flowering trees. The gardens were founded in 1821 primarily to introduce coffee trees and various other tropical plants of economic importance to the region. Even after it took on a more botanical emphasis in the 1840s, the garden remained a center for horticultural activities. Under the directorship of the botanist George H.K. Thwaites, the garden played a pivotal role in establishing the country’s flourishing tea industry in the late 1870s. Thwaites also brought in and cultivated the Brazilian rubber tree, which became a crop producer vital to Sri Lanka’s economy. The botanical collection has developed into one of the finest in the region.

Day 3: Kandy > Nuwara Eliya

The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, founded in 1889, is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia and probably the world. It is an institution, rich in tradition, history and carries an ambiance unparalleled in this country.

Founded, primarily for their rest and recreation, by the British planters who cultivated the land for tea in the Nuwara Eliya district, to this day it caters to some of the customs and traditions of the country’s colonial past. This quaint admixture of old-world charm and modern trappings invests it with a special aura, and is the essence of its attractiveness.

It is located in Nuwara Eliya, known the world over for the premier quality of the tea produced in the plantations that surround the club. Despite being situated just a stone’s throw from the town, the club still maintains an air of exclusivity, a desirable apartness, so that when one enters its gates, one is transported to a world that has been left behind by the march of history.

Located at the center of the town this 100 year old building is one of the most popular colonial constructions of “Little England’.The red brick exterior is hard to be missed while one is on the streets of Nuwara Eliya. Built in Tudor style, the post office has a distinctive edge and stands as a remnant of the old world Ceylon. A clock tower spirals from one side of the building.

The park is said to be named to commemorate the 60th Jubilee Coronation of Queen Victoria in the year 1897. Originally this was used as the research field of Haggala Botanical Garden. 27 acres in size, the park is home to many foreign species of trees. The location is a frequently-visited destination of birdwatchers as the serene atmosphere provides the opportunity to observe a large number of rare birds. There is also plenty of space for kids to play. The park comes alive with flowers during the month of April. Get a breath of fresh mountain air while relaxing in the warmth of nature at Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya.

Stop At: Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka
Set in the middle of the Nuwara Eliya town, Gregory Lake was built by Governor William Gregory between 1872 and 1877. The green around the Gregory Lake is famous for sunbathing, picnicking and generally relaxing with families. This area becomes crowded during the spring festival in April with carnivals and various other family friendly activities.

The Gregory Lake area has been converted into a sort of Lake Park with many recreational activities after the complete face-lift by the government recently. The ancient British era tradition of relaxing picnics on the shore of the lake, or more modern activities such as boat rides, swan shaped paddled boat rides, pony rides along the shore, and water walking balls, water sports such as jet skis, windsurfing and many more activities can be experienced. Gregory Lake is a fun filled family friendly location, attracting many tourists who visit Sri Lanka with these many attractions.

Day 4: Horton Plains National Park

Stop At: Horton Plains National Park, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka
Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by montage grassland and cloud forest. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 meters (6,900–7,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination and is situated 8 kilometers (5.0 mi) from Ohiya, 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) from the world-famous Ohiya Gap/Dondra Watch and 32 kilometers (20 mi) from Nuwara Eliya.

The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. In Sinhala the plains are known as Maha Eliya Plains Stone tools dating back to Balangoda culture have been found here. The plains’ vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montage forest and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. Forest die back is one of the major threats to the park and some studies suggest that it is caused by a natural phenomenon.

Day 5: Ella

Stop At: Ella Rock, Ella Main Street NECS-Nature Exploration and Conservation Society Sri Lanka, Ella 90090 Sri Lanka
Approximately 5km from town, Ella rock is a perfect place to go for a hike or trekking. But we have to warn you that this is not the easiest place to find direction to, so do your research before you start and read blogs of people who’s already being there. The trek would take approximately 4 hours. And the view will make up for all the aches and pains.

Stop At: Nine Arches Bridge, Ella Sri Lanka
The Nine Arch Bridge in Ella is on the Demodara loop and spans 91 meters at a height of 24m. The beautiful nine arches make it a very picturesque spot especially as it is located in a dense jungle and agricultural setting. Behind the railway, a forest is booming and below, tea leaves are being cultivated.

Stop At: Ravana Ella Falls, Ella-Wellawaya Road, Ella 90090 Sri Lanka
Named after a Sri Lankan legendary King Ravana, behind the water fall there is a Cave, later discovered as the place where he kept a kidnapped princes, Sita hidden away. This waterfall measures approximately 25 m (82 ft) in height and cascades down from an oval-shaped concave boulder. Excavations undertaken in the cave uncovered evidence of human habitation dating back to 25,000 years.

Day 6: Ella > Udawalawe National Park > Negombo

Stop At: Udawalawe National Park Sri Lanka
A small town situated in the Southern part of the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka famous for it National Park consisting of various kinds of species is the Udawalawe town. On the boundaries of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, the wet and dry zones of Sri Lanka, lies the Udawalawe National Park.

To protect the catchment of the reservoir as well as to provide a sanctuary for the wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, the Udawalawe National Park was created.

The area as to which the national park is situated was used for shifting cultivation, also known as Chena cultivation and once the park was declared farmers were gradually removed from the area. It is situated 165 kilometers from Colombo. It is a popular tourist destination and considered the third most visited parks in the country. The Udawalawe National Park provides an important habitat for water birds and the Sri Lankan Elephants.
